I have been stationed in Germany for about two and a half years. Here are a few reasons that I have found to hate Germany.
1. Germany is a VERY repressive country. there is "free speech", but it is only a front. You can get in trouble for speaking out about almost anything that the government does.
2. Not all, but most Germans that I have had the misfortune of meeting, are very cold people. They will avoid friendliness at all costs.
3. Prices are high, and Germans will charge for everything. I can not call customer service for my internet connection or even my cell phone contract without paying at least a 1 Euro connection fee, and 19 Euro cents per minute.
4. The weather sucks except for three weeks out of the year. Period…
5. The autobahn is extremely difficult to navigate without a GPS system.
6. The autobahn is constantly under repair, and the road crews are so lazy that it will take almost two years to repair a 10K stretch of road.
7. Germans "know" better than you about any subject. Period…
8. Germans do not understand the concept of privacy. The stereotypical nosy old woman, is an every day occurrence here.
9. You have to pay to use the restroom in many public places, and it isn't cheap. I have even been refused the chance to use the restroom because I was two cents short.
10. Germans will call the police on you for almost anything.
11. When they do call the police, the police are allowed to take up to a 40 Euro bribe on the spot. Be prepared to pay off the police for anything. They will even drive you to the ATM to withdraw the money.
12. There are miles of paperwork to go through to do anything in this country.
13. Germans are paranoid of violence. Don't buy any violent movies or video games in this country or you will be sadly disappointed by all of the censorship.
14. BMW's aren't as nice as you would think.
15. Neither are Mercedes'.

Hello PFC Small,

i am half german and doesn`t look like the typical german.

Have your friends or relatives the same opinion on germany as you ?

Germans are maybe a bit cautios and conservative towards foreigners.

Nobody knows you, you could be a gangster… :-)

germans pretend to be victims when in reality they were bloodthirsty vile people. at every old city in Germany I saw, they will say "WAH WAH WAH, WE WERE BOMBED AND SUFFERED." Then, to tone it down, they will write "this is to show the horrors of the war," when in reality, they are trying to show they are victims.

I hate germans, and my children will hate germany for what they did to my family. Period.

I think the moral is Germans are nothing more than weak-ass pussies. They can't stand for anthing thrown against them, and they ALWAYS cry wjenever they're offended. THAT proves Germany sucks ass–the people living in the wretched compan are more than cprrupted. Never EVER speak to Germans!

Yes, this is all absolutely correct. Germans also eat animals! My neighbor ate my cat!! One day it was gone and then I saw this guy grilling my cat and eating it together with a policman. I went to complain but they told me that a) I have to bribe them first
b) Their cat recipe was better

I tried my cat and it was not half-good. So that makes them even liars. And they are all nazis. And they suck in general… And their cars are also not good. Period. Period.

Wow… I wrote that a while ago. Got promoted since then, and I am reenilisting to stay in Germany for another three years. Not because I changed my mind about that country. Because my wife is from bulgaria an I have to be stuck in that place to get her papers done. By the way, she hates Germany too. I'm currently in Afghanistan now, and I am thanking God to be out of Germany for the year. I have sunshine, nice people, Dfac food (which is sadly, better than German food), and it doesn't rain nine months out of the year. And Germany isn't full of "nazi's". It's just full of stuck up, "holier than thou", assholes.

When I went to Germany in 1982/83, I was treated just horribly by the Germans. They make fun of you any opportunity they can get, and they will not help you in any circumstance. It was the worst country I experienced out of my entire European backpacking trip. Everyone there was so rude and cold toward me. I could not wait to get out. Only the foreigners there treated me decently. I will never travel there again. There have been several historical programs on television this week about the Germans and Hitler. I cannot believe what wretched people the "Aryan" Germans were even then. How can the world ever forgive them for all the international damage they caused? What's wrong with these people?? How could they let all that destruction happen? Denmark keeps all their bunkers as a reminder… And then they have the audacity to be so cold hearted toward the people of the world today, when they are the ones who murdered more than 4 million non-Aryans and attacked several countries and started a major world war! Such egregious arrogance. Who do they think they are? Americans even went back over to help them rebuild. Perhaps the present, not the past, causes them to be so unfriendly still - one should study their current regime in search for answers as well as the years leading up from WWII. Yet, I may never fully understand…

To be short about Germans:

First of all I have to work with them at school:

There are a lot of things which we as Dutch students found typical:

- they always know best
- it is their way or the highway
- if you try to explain they simply will not understand you as their opinion is a fact ( they think!)
- they think they have better knowledge on everything, and therefore are better writers, presenters and so on…

Furthermore…
The Germans who come to the Netherlands for education are always rejected or simple not good enough for their own Universities in Germany.
Just because our standard of enrolling into an education are lower then in Germany. So there are simple the stupid Germans who come to the Netherlands, and believe me… 90% of my education is German… and we really hate this. They come with their own cars, rich mommas and daddies to rule the student cities in the Netherlands.

I am really sick and tired of the number of German students coming to NL.
Go follow some education in your own ******* country!

I'm unfortunately going to be in Germany for 4 years because of my Air Force husband. We traveled Europe 4 years ago and I thought I was going to love this place. NOT TRUE! Small's list is completely true, and John's comment about them whining about being bombed is true too. I just remembered the German liason on base saying that all the old cities in Germany have been ruined because "of all the bombing you did on us." I should have said they deserved it for all the Jews, etc "you" killed! My husband's mom is a dirty German and I hate her guts. Oh and you also can't display ANY WW2 memorabilia or you'll be fined/arrested. USA has it's flaws too but at least we teach our kids proper history lessons, whereas here in Germany it "hurts too much" to be talked about. Gimme a break!!!

hi! For those who still hate Germany because of WWII, i totally understand. Just like me, as a Chinese, hate Japan so much and even don't want to buy anything made in Japan for what they did to us in WWII (believe me they were no better than Nazis). But i was really touched when I knew that Germany apologized for what they did and set up sets of laws to forbid even Nazi speech (as I learned from school). I think Germany is changing. While Japan never has apologized for what they did in Asia and try to wipe out everything even from their nowadays history textbooks. In the apology part, I think Germany is really great because to do it needs lots and lots of courage. Besides i like all my German friend in China, they are really great, though a bit cold at the beginning but if you are familiar with them you will find they are helpful and nice. (about local Germans I don't know). Now I am living in Israel and my boyfriend is jew, he says though he will never forget what Nazi did in WWII, he will try his best to accpet the new Germany and he trusts most of people are good. I appreciate that and for me it is painful because Japan doesn't hold the same attitude as Germany does, they refused to apologize, don't want to admit once they killed 300,000 people in 2 weeks in Nanjin, and ect… Undoubtedly now Germany's economy is the strongest in West European countries, I believe this is related to the hard work of every German too.

It doesn't matter one bit that you're adopted from Russia. My parents were Russian immigrants to the US and I was adopted by an American family. I still say Germany, of all the countries that I have been in Europe is the absolute most disgusting, dismal, depressing country I have ever seen. I'm in Afghanistan right now for god sakes, and I STILL prefer it to that miserable country full of ignorant, elitist, stuck up ass holes. If you REALLY want to defend Germany, go to other countries in the world. See how the waiting staff in other nations restaurants actually serve you and don't act like you owe them something for being in their presence. Go to a gas station in the US one dollar short of the price of your fuel, and I bet you someone will give you the extra dollar. If Germans would for a moment in their lives even attempt to embrace other cultures and try to show kindness to anyone other than themselves, then people wouldn't have such "horrible" things to say about your country. So your country is innovative. The US built the largest dam in the entire world. The Egyptians built the pyramids. The Romans built the Colosseum. I could care less what Germany has created, because even though they have created some great things, they believe they are the only important contributors to modern society. Grow the fuck up.

I agree with all the comments here. Personally I used to admire Germany, I came here to make research and I´m from an "undeveloped" country. However my experience here has been the worst. This is a country of prohibitions for everything, this is not a free country. And people are so rude.. I was depressed like for a month because I couldn´t believe such lack of politeness and education.Their country is not as beautiful as they think, they don´t live so good, their houses are extremely small, they have to rely on the government for EVERYTHING and also I cannot stand that all the time, their small talk is to criticize the country I came from, is just not polite to talk about this. I am used to say hi when I get to work, and to have some conversation with people, but this guys are used to just yell at you and mind only about themselves, thank God I´m leaving this week from this damn country.

Another wonderful entry in my travels. I am currently deployed for one year to Afghanistan. Last month, I went on R&R leave. I had two weeks to go to whatever country I wanted, and the army paid for it. Well, I went to see my wife in her country. My wife lives in Bulgaria, but in order to get to Bulgaria, I had to catch a connecting flight in Frankfurt. I got off of my flight, and headed to my connection, and I went back through security. Bring in the classic German hospitality. I got to the metal detector and it went off. My wedding ring was the culprit. I had a stainless steel, diamond encrusted wedding ring. They told me to take it off and put it in the bin with the rest of my things. I did what I was told, and walked through again without any issues. Well. I start putting all of my things in my pockets, and gathering my bags, when I reach back for the bin to get my wedding ring. The bin was gone. They took it and put it back in the line which I understand is an honest mistake. The bin appeared to be empty, and anyone could have done that, but when I asked about it, they told me that I was wrong and that the bin was empty. They told me that they looked inside the bin, and no wedding ring was there. I told them to recheck and they refused. I stood there for about five minutes, cursing back and forth with these insufferable people, and finally, I said **** you. I have a plain to catch and I'm not going to sit here and argue with you krauts. I love that country e_e

I agree with Linda, the US should pull all of our military assets out of Germany. The USSR is gone, there is little to no threat of communism spreading to Germany now without the intervention of the other EU members. Although I am very sorry for any racial insult she may have received while visiting the states, I would like to enforce the fact that the US is the most diverse nation on the planet. Racism lurks in every corner of our country, but at least we are trying to tackle our problem. It is also very saddening to see Linda imply that an American isolationism movement from German and maybe even EU politics is needed. When I visit Germany in the future, I really hope the majority of Germans don't think this way, just as I hope the majority of Americans don't feel the way that my fellow countrymen above do.

Also, I have a few personal queries for Linda, or any other Germans, relating to current events, and completely off topic from the above posts.

Would you have liked to see the US capture and try OBL in a court of law, rather than kill him on the spot? What would a "trail" have accomplished other than wasting time, resources, while filling another cell at Guantanamo? Do you think we Americans are "barbaric" or "medieval" for publicly celebrating our relief at this man's death like your CDU controlled news has said?

Nope. Never got my ring back. I am not saying that all people in Germany are the same. This is a generalization. The general populace that I have run into in Germany are very cold, rude, ignorant people. I have met a few delightful people in Germany, but for the most part, I would leave that country if I could. I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I am stationed there. I have tried every route to get out of that place but nothing has worked. I DID however get deployed to Afghanistan and because of that, I will never go to another duty station. I was supposed to leave Germany in February, which I was more than happy to do, but since I am on a one year deployment, then when I get back from it in July of this year, I will not have enough time left in service to leave. I'm stuck there for almost another year after I get back. I would rather stay here in Afghanistan than go back there.

I'm German - East-German. Born and raised in this land. My grandfather had 3 sons which all died on the eastern front in WWII. A war which was not theirs. As in all wars someone makes up reasons for which you have to go to arms. Whether you live up to this reasons or not does not matter at all. You get branded with ethnicity. Ethnicity is just a concept of the human mind to group people together or more important to divide them. Seems to me there's a basic need for humans to do so. There are the ones you know and the ones you don't know.
That's a place to start (for more one should read a bit about ethnicity and Nation, might help to see what is you and what might be not you).

Germans seem to be obsessed by this subject for good reason. Germans are also very interested in knowing what others think of them. Guess that is why i'm here.
Outsiders views can help you to understand yourself in new ways. Of course that means stress.
Heard it on the radio just a few days ago. A reason for falling into a depression is too much stress. And number one reason for stress is moving to a new place. Of course you can cope with stress differently. One other option here is hate :P.

So now my comments:

1. "Germans know it better than you."

This complaint was new to me. I think it is a really good one. Seems we have a culture of "I know better than you.". But to make it clear.: Every individual German has to deal with this all the time, too!!! My professor knows better than me, the seller around the corner knows better than me, the preacher at the church knows better than me, the politicians know better than me, all the experts know better than me, the turkish imam knows better than me, the radio and television hosts know better than me, teachers, professors, parents, doctors … even neighbors and sometimes friends know better than me. This is a never ending list. The battle between right/wrong, black/white, YOU name it!
I wonder if this is not true everywhere to some extent.
My guess is: The more ones community and its rules are in question or put out of reach, the more one feels this as a pressure.
Put in other words: If the common sense fails you, you will suffer.

Germans are very individualistic, not religious, not militaristic, not patriotic and most of all very weary to be pinned down as "typical" german :P. If you don't comply with that, life ain't easy here, pressure is high, even higher for people with a foreign background. But this applies everywhere in the world.

About the humour. What's that?

Of course we like to laugh too, but this is not our strength.
I imagine you could make a lot of jokes about germany and the germans far easier than laugh along with a german on his jokes.
(Aside from this: Anyone here knows a good afghan, japanese, czech, american, russian, … joke? )

Germans travel a lot, and most of them like it better abroad than at home. Our hearts are easily conquered by the hospitality we experience on our journeys. Seems the poorer the people, the more hospitable they are.

But as time goes on - i was 5 months traveling the us and mexico - we too, like everyone else, are growing aware of what we miss outside our own country.

Last word: Making friendships based on hate seems unhealthy to me.

This is the saddest thing I have ever read. I cannot believe what you are writing. I'm not German, and I've never been to Germany, but really? How can you sink so low? To hide from the world with a computer barrier. Say things about a country like that. How can you say things like that? I am ashamed, and so should you. Shame on you. How racist?

Now I can see why the world is so far away from World Harmony, and no racism. Because of you horrid people. I hope I never get the unpleasurable experience of meeting any of you. Terrible.

Imagine your country. Now put your country in the place where it says Germany. How do you feel, huh? Pretty bad.

Do you have no hearts? What if, a kind-hearted German person (and yes the exist! I have met an endless amount of them) read this? How do you think they would feel?

This is unbelievable. I just want to let you know, I have reported this to the cyber-department of my local Police Station. They are currently scanning your IP adress, to see if you have done any other racist things. [*site admin here - no, no they're not.]

You should feel very bad. SHAME SHAME SHAME on you!

I mean seriously! Read what some of you have read…God oh god. You want all Germans to die? What a terrible stupid generalization! Have you met the whole entire beautiful country? Huh? Huh? NO!

You've made me terribly upset, and I hope you understand that…Disgusting.,.

Alright so I have been talking to my wife (who is Bulgarian by the way) and we are discussing the plans for the remainder of my time in Germany. She is no fan of Germany either and considering that she has been to every country in western Europe (except Belgium) and liked all but one, that should tell you something. Her English is a little broken but her exact words were "I hope we don't having to stay in Germany for long. Germans are cold people". I have traveled to a lot of places. I've immersed myself in every culture I could. I spent three months working in Romania, and three in Bulgaria. I go to France and Italy and Switzerland every chance that I get, and I can tell you that as many places as I have been and as many people as I have met in those places, Germany and Germans were the least enjoyable people.

Where else in the world would you be surrounded by so many people that actually know everything better than you do? And actually make the effort to always share their wisdom with you at every chance they get?
Think of all the new things you could learn!

I wouldn't know where I would be if I wasn't told not to jaywalk even though there is not a child / car in sight, or even have my English corrected, by some German-speaker. Of course they would know better coming than a native English speaker.
Since being here I have learnt that you don't have to waste precious time standing in a queue in an orderly fashion when you can just push your way past to the front, saying hello to bus drivers, cashiers or anybody actually, give up your seat on the subway for older people/heavily pregnant women, help strangers/lost tourists or anybody in public, apologise when you knock someone AND if you are driving a car, you actually have the right to try and hit pedestrians and cyclists. Just being out in public basically gives you the right to criticize and haul insults at anybody in hearing distance.
Why would you give up being patronized, belittled and rudely treated by all waiters and service personnel? Let's face it: I refuse to have dinner in a restaurant where the staff doesn't abuse me.

Good for you Germany for rejecting all forms of manners that these foreigners try to impose on you. Good for you for not buying into this human decency and friendliness crap. Good for you for throwing off the shackles of the foreign oppressors that come to your country and expect you to change your ways and to be polite and kind.

No, I’m fucking with you :) Get a life you bitter wankers.

And before any Germans jump down my throat - my parents are both German. I just grew up in another country and have lived in several others. I have been here for a few years due to work and I am shocked by the lack of humanity and kindness here and just how rude the people are. I have never experienced anything quite like it. And yes I don't like it and yes I will be leaving :) I just wish that I would have had a different experience here.

In the mean time I will continue to be civil and super polite to you, because I LOVE the startled reaction that get from you each time you are confronted with this weird concept. Kill them with kindness people :).

Okay,
First off to the people whining about WW2. That was NOT Germany, that was the third reich okay? So shut the hell up about "vile Germans" and what not. Germany had an awful and cruel leader that deceived the entire country. Its over. Im sorry about any relatives you lost under the Nazi regime, but understand it was the THIRD REICH NOT DEUTSCHLAND.

Second,
We americans are just as bad. We talk crap about everyone and try to pry into everyones life. You think Germans are rude??? WERE RUDE "KNOW-IT-ALLS" you can't argue with an american without ending up in court or shot by the person you argued with. And bribery? Seriously, we're worse. Police take huge bribes all the time and our congressmen send nude pics to people. And prices so fricken what. It costs me $5 for a gallon of milk. PERIOD

Ok. I would love to know where you are from. As far as I know, the last violent crime in my town was over two years ago. Considering that about half of my town is packing and we have the largest gun shop in the state, there isn't much you can say about "violence in America". Rude know it alls? Where are you from man where milk is five dollars a gallon and neighbors pry into your business and tell you how to run your life? Last time I was home, you could still get a gallon of milk for two fifty. Unless the prices have doubled in a year, I think you are a little off base. I will admit. There are places in the country that cost ten dollars for a pack of cigarettes, and where you can be shot for five bucks, but that's the beauty of the US. You actually have an option NOT to live in those places. Considering the fact that you have to have a residence permit if you are not afforded the Status of forces agreement protections or "SOFA", you don't really have that option in Germany. Please. Tell me more that I can shoot down.

I'm not German, but have been living in Germany for years, so I consider myself in a position in which I can say something about Germany… Unlike many of those complaining here…
I read the start and all I could was roll my eyes because the arguments were so ridiculous…
I'll counter-argument a few:
1) Germans complain about thei government all the time. In Berlin, they even demonstrate evry monday. Actually, I've rarely seen a country in which people demonstrate as much as in Germany. So much for "no freedom of speech".
2) Indeed, Germans are considered colder than the average in the world. But, I have met a lot of people (and in 20 years that indeed makes a lot of people) who are extremely friendly and will do a lot to help you.
3) Compared to other countries, Germany is quite cheap. Let me name: England, Japan, USA, and that's by far not all of them.
4) The weather is worse in England and it rains more in Italy.
5) I personally love the german Autobahn.
6) Concerning paperwork France and Japan are worse.
7) Germans don't eat cats
8) They are pretty good with languages (they teach all sorts of languages at school, including ancient Greek)
9) Talking about WW2 more than 60 years after it ended is just childish and has nothing to do with Germany today. Wake up!
10) Germans watch the News all the time. we even have news in some trains.
11) Germans spend a lot of time learning history. Not only their own, but also world history.
And that's not all. I just don't have more time to write the rest.

I have been living in Germany since 2007. I have been depressed since then, and have considered leaving my husband who is German, but I cannot leave my kids. For years I tried to be open minded and tolerant. My German language skills are good so I can get around and communicate. But the more I stay here, the more I hate all things German. The arrogance, the lack of flexibility, the know it all attitude, the obsession with preserving what is German which is veil for the hypernationalism that still exists, the whiny claim to victimhood, the suppression of the Holocaust, the fact that the entire society hid their Nazi criminals, the wwii era was bad enough but then generations remain complicit now because they have been cowardly, amoral in their dealings since then, and it shows in everyday behavior, people do not help strangers in need, coldness, people watch you but hide in their houses. there is a terrible sense of style and lack of creativity, expensive but tacky clothes, people don't open windows in the train, they have totally irrational medieval fears, stuffy spaces and attitudes, hierarchical and bureaucratic, elephant like systems that cannot deal with "outsiders" though they tout being international, most of the men are cowards and the women are like domestic servants, there is a lack of integrity in their leadership, people always trying to beat and milk the system, they are hyper competitive, there is rampant public alcoholism, bad food, the sexism is unbelievable, like the Dark ages, don't be fooled just because Merkel is chancellor, the rest of society is run by white men who belittle women, or the few women in power only know how to behave either like men, or Hausfrauen, but not as individuals with any vision.

I'm so glad to come across the comments of others who feel like me. I agree with ALL of it. I had to grow up in Germany (my mother was German) and I hated it. I left Germany as a very young adult (as soon as I could) and made the mistake to come back after a split up. (having forgotten after all these wonderful years abroad how horrible Germany was). I'm currently financially stuck here and words cannot explain how much I suffer every minute being in Germany. EVERYONE is cold and feels superior to EVERYONE else. Sometimes it's more obvious, sometimes you'll only notice it after a while, sometimes the person seems friendly initially but still has the same mindset. The terrible thing is that even Germans who lived abroad have that same attitude of feeling superior to everyone else. It's also true that Germans are extremely competitive and they will always do everything they can to keep others (people seen as non-Germans) down, discourage them and keep them from succeeding in order to prove their racial superiority which they think they have to themselves. Starting a business here, what a crazy idea for a foreigner! Overhere foreign shops only cater for their communities. Germans won't buy there.
If only I could I would leave on spot. Oh yes I know that Germans generally don't accept any criticism of their country. They only support and help what they see as being their own racial brothers and sisters. People with only one German parent aren't accepted (not that I care either). I was excluded from my mother's family from the time I was born and even before. I can't wait to leave what is for me the most horrible country I've ever lived in. You can see it in their eyes how cold, rude and mean the Germans are! If you want to survive in Germany don't look into the cold eyes of Germans.I cannot recall any really positive experiences I've ever made with Germans. Whenever I can I go to France or to Italy just to breathe and I almost cry everytime about having to come back to this horrible country. Germany is good for Germans. That's all (the real ones, the pure ones, the only authentic ones) Thank god, I'm not one of them!!!

Peter, if you want to survive in germany you shouldn't just avoid eye contact, but also treat them with the same disdain they reciprocate to you. Approach a german in a threatening, aggressive tone and watch him pull his tail in. Despite their ruthless, competitive nature they're essentially pussies and will back down when confronted with resistance. It's one thing I've learned after 20+ years in this shithole!

@Miori: The weather is only better than that in England if you live in the extreme south or the extreme northeast of Germany. The middle part of Germany (especially Westfalia) is one of the least sunny places in the world. Trust me, I've done the research. The weather in Germany became sort of an obsession with me after living there for a while. The only region in the world that has less sunshine hours and more rainy days than this area is the northern part of Scotland (e.g., Aberdeen) and the Atlantic islands to the north of that — i.e., the Shetland and the Faroe Islands.

Wow! Do you even know what you german hater are talking?
Do you even know why people loved hitler? Because after world war 1 germany was down. People were starving and hitler brought them new hope. How wouldn't grasp a helping hand? What dog would bite its feeding hand? Hitler build germany and gave the germans new hope and a reason to be proud again. It wasn't that he stood up one day and said: Hey people chose me I kill yews. He first made the people like him and then started the yews slaying. Hitler was great then and had big power. He had his people everywhere. and everyone who did say something was dead the next morning. And with him all of his familiy.
At the time of world war two my grand-grandparents were living in russia, as germans. You know, they had nothing to do with the nazi, but at night russians would show up and take mothers and fathers away. My grandgrandmother was left unknowing of what had become of her husband who had never done anything wrong. She became blind through sorrow and had to raise 6 children. My grandfather was one morning waking up beside his sibling and both were death of starvation. He was 12 years old and had to care for them on his own, because people took his parents because they were german.
And why does never anyone speak about all the christians that had to die in russia, only because they believed in god and didn't want to give up there believings? You know there are so many horrible stories about how the russians showed up at night and many who actually survived the torture of russian jails, can tell stories of how they were treated only because they didn't want to give up beliving in god and din't want to turn kommunists. Does anyone know about how many people left there lifes there? How many children where left parentless, hungry and how many mothers never again heard of there husbands? I think every country has its dark story.
Its not like we don't know what germany did. In school we always go through it again and again. Its like people don't want us to forgot, which is a good thing. You say we ignore it? You are so wrong. We have it three years long in history. We discuss it again and again. And we never ever talk about it, like we were in the right. We know it was wrong. But it has been done and can't be changed and the only thing is to learn and not repeat the mistake. Every country has its dark point. Not only germany. We germans know what we did and are ashamed of it. Germany is not the only country that did slay yewish people. If you search in your own history you might be suprised what your country did.
But just place yourself in a german at that situation. It was either die yourself or help the nazis. Who would not think first of them self? Don't talk big think first. If in your country there would be a hitler and the Gestapo would stand in front of your door, treatening to kill your family or killing you if you helped your yewish friends, don't say you would tell them to go right ahaead and kill you. Can you actually say, I would have hidden yewish people, and I would have went against the nazi? Can you really? Tell me, do you stand up when a kid in your class is bullied? Or do you keep quite because you are afraid they will notice and you might be next? Its the same thing. People looked away or went with the crowed because they were scared they would be next. It only needed a small reason and you ended behind barres. Can you really stand up and say, well if the gestapo had stood on my doorsteps I would have told them to piss of. Yeah right. If they would have stood there, the only thing you could have thought of would have been how to save your own ass or your family. They would have treated to kill you famliy and all of the sudden you would have become the biggest and greatest yews hater ever. Don't you think? Be honest with your self. It is so easy to look at other peoples mistake and say I would and I would have, but would you really? You know in german we say, you should first walk in someone else shoes before talking about them.
And you know there actually where germans that gave up there life for helping yews and people who did speak up. Its not like everyone closed there eyes.
And before you go around with a big mouth telling oh how much you had germans of ww2 please think first if you had lifed that time in germany if you hadn't been in mitten of the yewish haters screaming at the top of your lungs to kill all the yews and of how great your hitler is, while the only thought you could think of is of how to save your family.
I am german and quarter yewish and I am proud of both sides in my family.

Now even though I hat it in Germany, I will admit that the Nazi's have very little to no influence in Germany any more. Yes there is a strong nationalist public opinion, but the German people have made tremendous effort to overcome that dark spot in their history. Even as Americans we have painful parts of our history. We have persecuted people, taken lands that did not belong to us, and found reasons to go into wars just to take what wasn't ours. (No I'm not talking about Iraq or Afghanistan. I've been there and those sick bastards all deserve to die for what they do to their own people).
In contrast the German history is much like our own excluding the genocide. We herded the Japanese citizens in our country into concentration camps during world war II. We imprisoned people during the cold war for believing in communism. I just want to talk about the issues with Germany that are still alive today. Not a dark past. We have all had to overcome some issues in our lives, but to hold a past transgression by a government against their people seventy years after the fact truly IS ignorant.

Hello everyone,
I'm German and have lived in Germany all my life.

I do agree with you on some issues, such as the arrogance and the bad food. It is also true that Germans seem cold but that is merely on the surface. If you really had made an effort to get to know them better you would have certainly made friends with some of them.
There are some points which have to be urgently refuted, though. As for its history, Germans are very aware of the atrocities committed during WWII, which is why there is barely any sense for national pride. Students learn about Germany's dark past in almost every grade right up to graduation. Education about this sensitive topic starts as soon as they enter secondary school.
Racism is still a problem nowadays, especially in East Germany, but overall people are very tolerant of foreigners. Unfortunately, I have to admit that many Germans have a relatively bad command of foreign languages, which is why it seems so rude when they "insist" on speaking German.
I'm at a university where thousands of foreign students spend a semester or two abroad and I have never heard any complains or accusations the likes of which I'm reading here. A considerable part of my friends consists of foreigners and although I wouldn't refer to myself as the typical German I would say that the majority of Germans is equally open-minded.

It's pretty ironic how all of these people post saying all Germans are rude, arrogant, and bigoted; yet fail to realize how racist and close-minded their blanket statements are.

There's nothing quite as ignorant as saying you hate a nation consisting of millions of people for the actions of a dead political party that hasn't existed for the past 70 years and a rapidly dwindling group of old men who were misled by an insane dictator.

The people are cold and after 20 years I´m lucky if I can count German friends on one hand, most of our friends are other foreigners. There is no friendly service in shops and it´s even worse in hospitals where you get treated like a lump of numbered meat. The courts are biased and the govornment workers are lazy shits. You have to pay for every little thing and I mean everything. Going to a pub is not to have fun it´s to stay in your own little groups get drunk and whinge about the people next to you, if you do try to have fun or try to strike up a conversation with someone else then you are regarded as the devil incarnate! The number of anti-german, racist comments on this page is just ashaming. Mostly all facts are basically too short-minded, lacking more information or are even completly wrong.

Dear SPC Small: As it is a fact you commented again and again how much you hate Germany and being here, let us have a little discussion about it. I will start with the points listed in your first post:

"1. Germany is a VERY repressive country. there is "free speech", but it is only a front. You can get in trouble for speaking out about almost anything that the government does."

In Germany, every person has the right of free speech. It only is limited by statements that might considered as harassment against other religions, cultures, countries and ethnicities. There is nothing more repressive compared to other countries like the United States.

Not all, but most Germans that I have had the misfortune of meeting, are very cold people. They will avoid friendliness at all costs.

We might not appear as open-hearted as people from other continents like South America, that might be a truth. Nonetheless, most germans are very empathetic when it comes to other people being in distress or seeking for help. When staying in the United States, I often noticed Americans being very, very friendly from the beginning, but just giving some kind of play, not really being nice because they liked me as a person, more because of some kind of "necessary social behavior", some kind of rule. We Germans might not invite you to diner from the beginning, but if we do, we honestly express sympathy and are not surprised if you do come over. I really do prefer the German way on this topic, believe me.

3. Prices are high, and Germans will charge for everything. I can not call customer service for my internet connection or even my cell phone contract without paying at least a 1 Euro connection fee, and 19 Euro cents per minute.

If you dial special service numbers, you will have to pay a certain amount of money per minute for the service you are given. This standard exists throughout most European countries.

4. The weather sucks except for three weeks out of the year. Period…

You're not really saying that is our fault, are you?

5. The autobahn is extremely difficult to navigate without a GPS system.

Germany is not big enough to use an east-west / north-south highway system. If you're driving on the Autobahn, you will have a straight track with places where cars can enter and exit the road. Exits are clearly marked and announcend about 1-2 miles before. How could it be easier?

6. The autobahn is constantly under repair, and the road crews are so lazy that it will take almost two years to repair a 10K stretch of road.

True! You have some money for us? Because we need it for schools, universities and health care. Roads have secondary priority, we Germans prefer riding by bycicle anyway.

7. Germans "know" better than you about any subject. Period…

Is that an empiric proven fact? Is just some useless statement you are throwing against a whole society of 82 million people. Should I start with stereotypes about Americans?

8. Germans do not understand the concept of privacy. The stereotypical nosy old woman, is an every day occurrence here.

I think Germany is one of the worlds leading countries when it comes to protect your privacy. You've most likely been spied from some kind of US Intelligence Agency dozen of times, but complaining about a single, old (and probably bored) nosey woman? Honestly?

9. You have to pay to use the restroom in many public places, and it isn't cheap. I have even been refused the chance to use the restroom because I was two cents short.

In fact, you can use most restrooms for free, e.g. in every restaurant you're dining. You will have to pay a small amount of 25-50 cents on some public restrooms like train stations and parks. This is to ensure rooms can be cleaned up regularly. Not to mention, I have seen this on my journeys around the world often enough, even in Asia.

10. Germans will call the police on you for almost anything.

I've been living in Germany for a really long time now and never been called police on me. If you're out on the streets acting as aggressive and anti-german as you do here, it is no surprise people might call the police.

11. When they do call the police, the police are allowed to take up to a 40 Euro bribe on the spot. Be prepared to pay off the police for anything. They will even drive you to the ATM to withdraw the money.

No, they are not allowed to take any kind of "bribe" or payment for no reason. You obviously have commited a violation against valid German law, which you were charged for. The fact they drove you to the ATM is a kind service from them, giving you a chance to clear your debts. The second option would have been an arrest. Choose what is better.

12. There are miles of paperwork to go through to do anything in this country.

True. We want everything to be neatly carried out. It might cost some time, but it prevents problems in the future.

13. Germans are paranoid of violence. Don't buy any violent movies or video games in this country or you will be sadly disappointed by all of the censorship.

German authorities have to ensure protection for children and youths. When over 18, you can buy nearly all kind of horror/action/violence movies and games, except for a few ones that are so abnormally brutal and disgusting that they have been withdrawn from a German court of law. However, this is a normal procedure in most civilised countries. Some movies might lack short brutal scenes, but this is due to the movie companies who cut them out to reach a lower age rating for their customers here.

14. BMW's aren't as nice as you would think.
15. Neither are Mercedes'.

We don't force you to buy one. I have driven many cars around the world, and the best ones ever were Japanese and German made. If you don't like it, buy a Ford and be happy. We don't mind!

Dear SPC Small - maybe it is not very astonishing why you and your wife are not blending well with German society - if you're coming or rather living in a country having such an attitude against its culture and people, mostly even things people can't be held responsible for, you should consider its not the other side who is at fault.

Every single person with a good soul and honest character is welcome to Germany at any time, no matter where you're from or who long you're staying. Be our guest, forgive us our negative attitudes we have like every other country and you'll sure enjoy your stay here!

Very little voilence except Berlin and Frankfurt but that is because of the Russians and Turks. The Germans should be stronger Nationalist so they will kick shitty forieners like the Turks and Russians out. My only real complaint is the super strict guns laws. I want my guns.

I have to say I whole-heartedly support the critical comments about Germany. I had the misfortune to be born there, and left as soon as I could. I absolutely hate that place and will never go back there again. After I became American I burnt my German passport - no kidding.
and it IS true. Free speech is a concept, not a reality. They're not so much nazis anymore but communists now, just as bad.
The rudeness is unbelievable. People are envious like hell, and will watch like hawks what you have or do, get into everybody's business and try to report you for any kind of crap, like taking a bath after 10 pm or not cleaning the walkway in front of your house.
And they really are "better-knowers", and "better-earners" are despised.
Mediocrity as a lifestyle. Ambition and performance are not rewarded but punished. There you have a nation of potential freeloaders having a great life at the cost of the few who are hard working and being taxed to the whazoo.

Karly, I couldn't have said it better myself!

I'm also still bearing the stigma of being born here. Looking forward to burning that $#@%ing passport and shoving their rip-off taxes where the sun don't shine! I was actually laid off from my last job because I performed *above* expectations! This is definitely no place for ambitions. I will never work for a German company again.

As RandomPerson so rightly put it: it's a great place with shitty people. They're the ones who should have been exterminated in WW2. The Allies would've done well to recolonise Germany after war's end.

I do live in Germany but all I can tell about are negative experiences, especially from our own filthy folk. If you are not German, you will get treated by nearly everyone as a misfit. People would avoid you, due to their prejudism they hold against foreigners which is indeed part of the German mentality. You may call that 'racism' since today they are not allowed to act like Nazis anymore (thank god we lost the world war twice). It occurs often that even kids make racistic comments or directly insult foreigners - indeed a bunch of filth. Oh yeah: and we are a dog-eat-dog-society.

Our politics is not better: you have to pay taxes for nearly anything. Living in Germany is more expensive than in foreign countries. If you are in a middle economic class you would still have to live like a poor person: 1/3 of your income is gone for taxes, then you have to pay taxes for your property, for everything you buy and even for rainwater. What the hell is going wrong with this?

And is there anything beatiful in that culture? My short answer: no. Cannot tell about a single thing which might appeal me…

There are certainly many reasons not to like the kraut huns. The fact that they carry their snobby racist attitudes even to this day is just one of them. How about the 30 million people they killed in the war. I'm referring to Jews and Non Jews that were murdered by this filth. I do however like some German classical music. The Deutsche Democratic Republic was perfect for the scum. Exactly where they belong, behind a wall with machine guns.

I am not really sure how I wandered onto this site, but I find it quite interesting. As it so has it, I am an american living in Germany and feel quite depressed most of the time. Luckily, it was a relatively sunny winter! My main sob about living here is the rigidity the people can take on in regard to the language. I guess that is because English is a global language (so we're used to hearing different accents) and German is a relatively small language. I am trying to stay positive! I can say that in the history and politics portion of my integration course we did cover the world wars, hitler, and the Holocaust at some length (so I don't believe anyone is trying to forget) Also I experience a lot of anger and discrimination toward americans, probably in the same way some other people view present day germans as nazis. i wish everyone well!!!! good luck!x

Wow, a lot of folk do not like the Fatherland.

Yes Germans are hard to deal with and they frequently demonstrate little to no respect for the rights or even the presence of others. It is my experience they are a sour passive-aggressive, authoritarian and hostile folk who are mean to the extent they generally look for and take any opportunity to make trouble for another person. Give them a rule to enforce and they will attack. However, I think this topic is a text to be addressed at another time.

I think we need to understand that Nationalism and Patriotism are not the same. As Stephen Fry (I think) summated, to be a patriot is to love your identity while not needing to see others as less. Alternatively, nationalism is extreme patriotism, a nationalist wants their identity to be imposed on all others, because nationalists need to think (they) their country is superior.

At some level Germany knows the world is wary and still attends to the actions of and within Deutschland. The country knows they can’t get away with negative/racist/nationalist behaviours and have become rather proficient at presenting the impression of an open inclusive nation.

Seriously, just look at the country, where is the diversity, the depth of cultures etc? This is a nation situated in the middle of Europe and with the exception of kebab shops and a small number of Eastern food outlets, Germany is white, conservative and in my experience, intolerant to the point of racism.

I think if you want to understand how Germany sees itself then try imagining Germany as being represented by a painting. The paintings frame is the nations boarder and the wall the on which the painting is hung represents Europe and the rest of the world. The painting would be stark white with a frame colour ranging from off white and progressing toward black on its outer edge with the surrounding walls being a mess of colour. Unfortunately Germany conveniently ignores the fact the painting is supported by the wall and the colour on everything around the painting is diversity….. not a white mono-culture that would not be there without the wall!

This country does not want to have to work with diversity and they do not like or want like difference (they barely tolerate foreign tourists). I suspect this is one of the reasons so few immigrants have good things to say about Germany. It is my experience that Germany actually believes it is better but is nervous about actually saying they are superior. Simply, Germany is a nationalist state and because of a world view (and historical behaviour) they are trying to pretend they are a progressive nation.

So PFC Small, as for maintaining a positive attitude, I will leave you with this thought…
If it is brown, looks like a Poo and smells like a Poo, then it really doesn’t matter how positive you are, it is unlikely to ever be a chocolate. There is a lot of chocolate in the world, so perhaps a time exists when we can rightly stop trying to pretend a Poo is a nice chocolate and move on (did I stretch that metaphor a bit much).
Just maybe, it is not you who is the problem!

I think this long(ish) post was succinctly stated by a southern hemisphere friend who said of Germany:
“…VEE arr zuperior, arr you ALL ZTUPID, vy doez da vorld not underztand vee are ZUPERIOR…

What is the difference between a German and a supermarket trolley? The supermarket trolley will at least try and go its own way!

One more short note….
The post by "Laughing it off" submitted on June 13th, 2011 is the best.
It sums the situation nicely…
All I would add is the particularly German action of looking away after they have done something crappy so it is harder for their target to confront them.
Also it would like to highlight the deliberate nature of their shitty actions. For example, imagine two people are talking on the street and they see someone approaching them. One (or both) of those talking will shift their position just enough as to force the approaching person to walk on to the road (and yes they will then turn away as if to say "oh oops, who me"). Seriously, at first I thought I was imagining it, I mean who would be such an ass, but it is true it really happens!

I've read almost all of the comments and I can't say whether I agree or I disagree. First of all I've never been to Germany, I lived in Jamaica for 15 years and am now living in Australia. I am now seventeen years old. I have met a family of Germans once and being the warm hearted person I am I introduced myself because I find them absoloutely fascinating. They were really nice people and my brother speaks German and that is the reason why I introduced myself because I heard them speaking and I recognised the language. I think their langauage is beautiful. I only came on here to find out about Germans because I want to study or live there some day but now I'm not so sure. I am of dark skin, some may consider me Afro-Caribbean but I am more mixed than some people may think. My greathgrandfather was from Scotland and believe it or now was a Jew and my greatgrandmother was from India and the rest of my family are of African descent. To be frank, I absoloutely love Germans, what happened in the past was a tragedy but I don't think we should judge a nation of people because of it. I met this amazing German exchange student a couple weeks ago and she is soo nice and I e-mail her often. She didn't want to leave but she has to. In my endevours to go to Germany I am now teaching myself the language. AS I said before I ahve never been there so I can't judge nor will I after I visit. If what you guys are saying is true then it's sad and I hope it changes but based on me meeting a few Germans who were very nice people I tend to think other wise but I may be naive. So what I will do is make my judgements based on my own experience. I said earlier that I wasn't sure if I wanted to go but I will still go. Uh it's sad that some of you are saying that we should hate the Germans, I personally don't think we should hate anyone despite what happened in the past. The past is the past and what happened, happened and it was really sad but dwelling on that isn't healthy for us. So let's move on and embrace everyone from every race and show them love and kindness and then they will see how amazing it feels. In saying that I leave saying , ich liebe Deutschland und Deutschen. God Bless :) <3

I hate Germans because I know what they did, how they cover up their despicable history behind the mask of " we didn't know what they (the nazis) where doing. When all along, they elected him, loved all the confiscated Jewish items they received, loved seeing Jews degraded and murdered and until the end of the war had the time of Thor lives in a Jewish bloodbath. I am not Jewish and I wouldn't set foot in that filthy place for any money in the world. How many of their doctors did experiments are victims in camps and ended up never serving time? They should be forced into a concentration camp

This site is funny. I am an ex-patriot German, trying to adapt to my new home in Mexico. I have glanced through most posts and - yes - understood what most foreigners "hate" about Germany. Most arguments that concerned Nazi history I totally understand. Also, the general unfriendliness, knowing-everything-better-than-you, and the love for criticizing others, is something I immediately notice, even just arriving on Franfurt airport. It annoys me tremendously, especially after having lived in such a warm-hearted, friendly culture like the Mexican.
But on the other hand, hey I am German, and so, according to those superficial and ignorant voices presented here, it appears to be my duty to emphasize, that I know better about what the pros and cons of Germany are: I told you about the cons, here come the pros: there really IS a transparent forum with pluralistic voices. Religion is THANK GOD not fundamental for societal organization. There is a real concern among much of the population of what is going on in the world — and not only in your humble village. Learning one, two, or more foreign languages is the basis to understand other people. Universities have many internationally oriented programs that study languages, arts, and cultures of the most exotic places (to Europeans).
I feel ashamed if you as foreigners have made unpleasant personal experiences in Germany, and I admit there are arrogant, violent, stupid idiots galore. But it wouldf only show your own personal limitations if have not been able to differentiate between those and the other half of the people.

Germany is a beautiful country and don't compare them to what they were when Hitler was their leader. Hitler was a resentful geek who had no empathy for humans, even his own people! Germany was very, very lucky back then that Roosevelt didn't have the A-Bombs 6 months earlier because you think Berlin was bad from conventional bombing raids? Roosevelt wanted so bad to drop the nukes on Berlin and Nuremberg, so Germans please don't whine about getting bombed because you got off easy…trust me.

I've lived in Germany for about 2 years as well and I totally agree with you, you might also want to add:

-The food variety in supermarkets is disappointing and usually bad quality.

-A good hamburger is almost unthinkable of, even if you go to the most famous 'chic' burger place in the city, it will be a big disappointment. (tried in Koeln, Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Trier, and Munich)

-Even paying 40euro for a steak in a supermarket is a big disappointment, and it's insulting that the meat comes with a baggie of salt and pepper for a steak that price.

-Fresh fish is also unthinkable of, unless you are close to some coast you are going to have to deal with frozen insipid fish.

-There are many Turkish and Eastern European young offenders, I never had "street problems" in my life until I went to Germany, I had uncountable problems with Turkish/German, Polish, Russian, young offenders trying to pick up fights, steal from me, provoke, insulting women, disrespecting girls in a group of people walking somewhere to have a beer.. up to the point of even touching them, etc. (in many occasions)

-Laws are super socialist and in the end benefit criminals more than victims.

-Germans are always comparing, they will never accept a foreigner or a country being better than them.

Drink and party, eh? It's been my experience that you can basically ONLY get along with Germans if you do get drunk with them. I think their bodies require a certain minimum blood alcohol level for their facial muscles to even be physically capable of forming a smile. Having to spend time with Germans that are sober can therefore often be an excruciatingly painful experience.

I am from Italy, we do not need a reason to hate Germans, they provide plenty on their own. Stupid people stupidly subservant to stupid authorities, they can't even be evil, they are just obedient, dull, inflexible opinionated people who for some reason are at the heart of every catastrophic event in Europe since they were allowed to unify in the XIXth century. Like most Northern European they have an inflated sense of their worth, only unfortunately there are more of them………….. we should have given the Russians 10 years of free hand in 1945..forbid reconstruction and let them grovel in the shit they brought on themselves…..we'd probably be better off today, or at least we'd have fond memories as the new gauleiters lord over us

I've always stood up for Germans whenever they were attacked by my friends. Everyone joked about me going to the Nazis for the summer. I was excited to go to Germany - I thought the best things about Germans. I thought they were smart, loved nature and sports, loved to travel, were nice and cultured. I could not be more wrong. I absolutely hate it here. Germans are unfriendly racists. They are not very bright people at all. I haven't met more than 1 person who speak English - how is this even possible?? People make fun of Americans for not speaking foreign languages, come to Germany, it is worse. I make an effort to speak to Germans in German and they laugh at me! I would love to hear them try to speak one of the three other languages I speak. So ignorant! I have tan skin and dark features as a Greek-American, and everywhere I go I get stares. What are you looking at?? Of course they ask me where I'm from, and when I say I'm Greek, they LOVE to talk about how many problems my country has. Is that all you can talk about with me??
The German attitude has surprised me very much. I wasn't expecting this and I'm very disappointed to say that all the bad things I heard about Germany are true!!! I can't wait to leave, this has been the worst experience of my life.

I flew to London on airberlin via Dusseldorf. First the good: Everyone associated with the airline was brilliant. I flew business and got awesome friendly service and apparently that extended to those in coach. In fact, it seems it was better service in both classes than what we're subjected to on American flights (even the one-hour flight to London had full-blown cockatil service, something that doesn't happen in coach in the U.S.)

Now I know my experience in Germany is limited to the Dusseldorf airport, but it was enough. I had to go through passport control twice for each leg of the Germany. They love doing the look at the passport, look at you, look at the passport and furrow the brow just to try and freak you out. And while they will politely (kinda) hand over an EU passport to its owner, they would literally slam my American passport down on the table and grunt. Yes, four slams, four grunts. I couldn't get out of there fast enough and have not one scintilla of interest in spending time, or money, there.

Germans are normally unfriendly to foreighers and even other germans that are not in the same region as they are.

I have been living in Germany for over 20 years. I met the love of my life so I stayed on after getting out of the military. As an American I find them rather rude and have no manners at all. I work in a supermarket chain and have contact with them daily. And I find them barbaric. They let their children play on the floor and have no respect for others or anything else in that matter. I have also contact with the foreighners that also shop and I find most of them friendly and polite. And to really top it off germans cannot read. They are reading the sale sign wrong and think that they are right when they are wrong. A german will not ever say sorry or excuse me. They do not know how to greet someone. They blurt out what they are lookiihng for for without saying hello or ,"Excuse me". If I am walking in a direction and they ask me something I usually egnor them. I usually walk on buy and pretend that I did not hear them. The people that I work with are usually cold hearted and think that they know it all.
Most or all of my friends are foreighners which have travel the world like I have and have experienced the world. The germans that I know usually do not even travel to other countries. They usually make comment on America even without have been there.
And most germans are thieves. you really have to watch and see who steals what. Even my bosses steal from the supermarket. ANd I really shame for people like that. Since the laws are so lack of prossecution most germans get off scott free. But on the other hand if you are a foreighner you will get the worst end of the deal.
I love next to germans and it took them 10 years to say hello. And you will never be invited to them for anything. If you have money and have parties then they will come over, eat, drink and party without even saying thank you. And a german will not usually share anything with you.

So you see I live hear because of the benefits for the health care program. That is what is keeping me here. The germans can go to hell as far as I am concerned. They are so far behind the world when it comes to technich and lots of other things.

So yes I do hate them all.

I am half German, was born there but grew up in Poland. I have twice tried living as an adult there, and both times I had to run away, traumatized.
I hold a German passport and generally should be considered a "citizen" of that country but whenever I turned, I was treated as a foreigner, even though I don't have a foreign accent and my German is fluent.
In the UK, where I live now, nobody refers to my nationality or ethnic background, in Germany I was constantly referred to as "Polish", especially by friends which given the fact that through most history Poles were considered racially inferior made me feel rather horrible.
In the recent years they have become more nationalistic, more proud to be German, and more forgetting of their history, it all adds up to it being an unfriendly place with people who totally lack any humility.
It is only 20 years since the horrors of East German spying apparatus were stopped, how can they think that the society is "normal" now, full of people above suspicion? Don't buy German products, see how they will be able to rub their superiority into their poorer neighbours faces, when nobody buys their arrogant sh*t.
And to those poor little teenagers who come here and whine that they are too young to have participated in history, therefore they are the "innocent Germans", who have the right to German pride, I say if you are proud to be German, you are proud to be a member of a deeply psychotic, arrogant, racist nation. And now go and whine how the world hates your perfect Germany.

I am surprised to see this blog still getting comments. I got out of the military and moved to germany to be with my german wife. She is defferent than other germans. I have lived here for 2 years now. When I first came here, I thought people for the most part would be generally friendlier and more compassionate. I thought wrong. I have had nothing but bad experiences with people since I stepped off the plane. Germans are the most rude and inconsiderate, stuck up, self absorbed people I have ever met in my life. My wife agrees with me on this. She has lived abroad and knows how much better it it could be in germany.
A beautiful country but a straaaaaange and fu%$ed up people. If you are looking for common sense, you will not find that here. They think they are above everyone else, The way they are and the quality of things in germany should be lower than sh%t. Like one of the other comments had said, If the peoples attitude would be different in germany then we would not say these things. Could all the people writing these things be wrong? I don't think so.
And I have heard about the starring down of other people by germans. Why do they do this? I too have experienced this here in germany. In the United States that might get you beaten up or even shot. Its very rude and offensive to stare. There are just too many things too mention here to write down. I am glad I found this blog. My wife, my son, and I will be here for most likely another couple of years. For now we are stuck in Nürnberg germany.
I am not referring to all germans, just the majority of them.

Germans are very much a group people. Like tribes from deep darkest Africa. If they do not recognise you as being part of a group there first reaction can be hostile/offensive. Very few of them are true individuals, this may account for there shit sense of humour/ lack of charachter. My Uncle is English but is to them the ideal Englishman, because of the fact he is a doctor PHD, looks German, speaks German and has lived and worked in Germany for a German company. Britain is a free thinking open country, Germany is strictly conformist. I like Larger and continental railways but I won't be bothering to visit the place.

I have friends in the UK and USA and after the post's here, i asked them how they think about germans. Everyone said they had no problems with germans and they had some german friends.

Tell me more about how everyone is friendly in the rest of the world.
Ofcourse not all germans are friendly, but saying you hate EVERY german is just stupid.

Just google "Reasons to love germany" their are comments from people around the world just saying good things about germany. How is that possible?! Maybe because you can't accept germans. Face it, you're just racist.

i'll always come back to this blog. Because i care. I want to proof that germans care about foreigners. Most of us actually care ALOT. Why do you think we have so many foreigners?! I dont hate a single race. Well, i dont like most the turks, though. Because i always had bad experience with them. But ofcourse i have some turk friends. I would be pretty stupid if i hate them all because i had bad experience with 4-5 of them. Think about it.

I've been in Germany two weeks. In that time, I've had minimal to no interaction with Germans beyond the absolutely essential. Two of those interactions were these:

me: "happy birthday"
german: "actually my birthday was yesterday, but i'll accept it because i'll never see you again".

me: "is that your dog in the painting?"
german: "yes and my cat. you get two pictures in one."
me: "what?"
german: "you are really stupid."

I can't tell if these are supposed to be jokes. If so, i am sorry for these folks.

People have stared down their noses at me for looking and behaving differently. I think this is because they have a profound faith in doing things the established way (and not using common sense or innovating).

On the other hand, i've experienced no violence and they actually have public transportation and bike lanes. They have tons of parks. So, they've got a nice place, they just seem to be assholes.

Kyle uses the word "racism" and "racist" alot. I would'nt have thought there is any scientific meaning for the word race. Germans love to group things it's an intricate part of there mentality. The fact is im English and proud of it and your German that's the difference.

Kyle. You just hurt your argument considerably.
"Arent you ashamed? An "evil german" is better in English as you."
Aren't, "G"erman, Better with/at speaking/communicating in/ English THAN you.
"Don't".
Honestly, and I'm ashamed to say this about my own people, you sound like an american. Most likely a teenager between the ages of 13 and 17.
Tell me Kyle. Have any of your "friends" actually BEEN to Germany? How can you tell me that it is such a wonderful country? I considered that to absolute worst country that I have ever had the misfortune to visit. When I came back from Afghanist I was sad. Not because of a year away from my wife, and not because of anything tha happened down range. I was sad because of all the places in the world that I could be, I was going back to Germany. Everyone I know that has been there, and even a few that were born and raised there, say that Germany is a hell hole. My brother was on a tour through Europe from December to February of 2010-2011. On the Germany portion of the trip, he cut it three days short because of the xenophobic people that lived there. He hated it in Germany. In his words, the weather was warmer than the people. Kyle, I expect you will reply, and most likely it will be the same day that I post this, but when you DO, don't lie to me. If you're going to argue on the internet, at least have your facts straight.

Well, I'v been living in Germany for 8 years now, I speak fluent German and am self-employed in language services.
My German experience has been a real mixture of ups and downs. When I lived in Niedersachsen I never had any problems with anyone - I felt pretty well integrated. After moving to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the East everything went downhill to the point where I didn't like to leave the house. I went from a loving, caring person to someone who hated people and fantasised about killing them (guess that's how terrorists are made guys). I lost track of the number of racist incidents and comments about the way I look as they happen on an almost daily basis. Many people here just assume I can't understand them and others are just really nasty. Anyway I'm wrapping up my business here and going home. There are a lot of Germans in my country that buy up property in the countryside (and break up villages) and how am I supposed to treat them with so much pain in my heart.

germans suck

September 23rd, 2012

@kyle: of course i read your post, and you're being a typical german racist. turks have done NOTHING to you in comparison to what germans have done to them. turks have to put up with overt racism, violence, vandalism, and mental abuse from germans on a daily basis. i've seen it and have experienced it myself.

i'm not turkish but i am a minority so i also have to experience the extreme racism and intolerance of germans every single day. if i was a german-born turk and lived here for my whole life, i would be very hostile towards germans as well.

please take a look at yourself and try to understand what your words mean from an outside perspective. you're looking at people in terms of their RACE/NATIONALITY instead of as INDIVIDUALS. the TURKS did something bad to you (even though it was only a small number of them) so you don't like the TURKS. it should be A COUPLE OF PEOPLE did something bad to me so i don't like THOSE PEOPLE. this is what's wrong with germans, you see a few people doing something that you don't like and you think you're so much better than those "dirty auslanders". this attitude is why racism exists.

like i said, i'm American and i've been all over the world but i've never seen such appalling racism and acceptance of racism as i have here in germany. the germans that aren't racist themselves are too cowardly to speak up when they see it for themselves. they just pretend that it doesn't exist and say that we are too sensitive.

i've lived here less than two years and in that time i've had my car and home vandalized with nazi words and symbols, have been spit at on the street, and have had racist abuse shouted at me on the street. meanwhile, police and people who would claim that they aren't racist themselves have not come to my defense and have said that i'm being too sensitive. i have never experienced such racism anywhere else in the world and elsewhere, people actually speak out and protest against this kind of treatment so my only conclusion is that a huge number of germans are either racist or completely spineless.

@ kyle again: "I have friends in the UK and USA and after the post's here, i asked them how they think about germans. Everyone said they had no problems with germans and they had some german friends. "

have they actually been here? because before i moved here i would have said the same thing… the germans i met in America are wonderful people, but obviously the xenophobes and racists stay at home. why would they move abroad where there are so many brown people around? think about it…

"Most of us actually care ALOT. Why do you think we have so many foreigners?!"

you DON'T have "so many foreigners" you silly git… germany is NOT that racially/culturally diverse compared to most other first world western countries. go to the US, Canada, France, or the UK and i guarantee you'll see a much more diverse group of people (who get along quite well, by the way) than you will anywhere in your precious deutschland.

i can tell from your comments that you actually do care so i wish you would try to think outside the box. germans are raised to think they're always right (that's why they argue so much) but try to consider for a moment that maybe in this case, you're the one who is wrong. you're reading opinions from several people from all over the world and you're arguing that all of us are wrong and you're right. we can't ALL be wrong… think about it.

I have no doubt the world would be better of without Germans. The only good krout is a dead krout. At there core they are still fanatically nationalistic, racist highly intolerant people. The products they produce are without doubt excellent, but to be honest this counts for shit compared with the mayhem they have caused for millions of people around the world since they became a single nationalist state. As I have said before Britain took it's own culture around the world and although not perfect on the whole it was a good thing for the people of other nations in the days of empire. So when someone says they are proud to be German given there history, I have huge reservations about there state of mind and understanding of the world in general.

Believe it or not, I actually have a neighbor that is a real German born man that is 91 years old and was a soldier in WWII German side. I know it was not his fault as he was drafted. After the war he wanted to move here to the US with his wife to start a new life because his East Germany was taken over by the Russians. He already had family living here in the US before he settled here. To make a long story short, he doesn't talk kindly about Jews. He did say Hitler was stupid for ruining Germany. What started to get to me was all he could do was brag about the women he had while stationed in France for two years and how he enjoyed the whores while he killed a couple of French men and while France was under the Nazi's. He is very arrogant and a bragger. Competitive. If someone has money he will look jealous and say "who's richer me or them". I did well here". One of the first things he says when meeting you is that Germans are smart and he will start naming all the cars from Germany. "Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagon". And jokingly I said to him isn't BMW standing for British Motor Works? I knew this wasn't true but just kidding him. And he looked like he wanted to kill me. Never showing any remorse for the war except for what happened to his country and people. I grew to hate this man. Oh, and he has no respect for old women. Only friendly to the young women. When will he die.

My father, a born and bred German himself, always used to tell me that the foremost character trait of most Germans was a constant feeling of envy and jealousy towards other people who had been more (or even just equally) successful in life as they themselves…coupled with a constant, almost desperate need for praise and recognition. After having spent quite some time in Germany myself, I would say that this was a pretty accurate assessment. If you want to get along with Germans, you have to compliment and praise them all of the time. Very tiring and irritating…

Hi,
Well I am a Brit and have been living in Germany now for 16 years so I can judge what I am about to write.
The land is clean and it's a paperwork land.
As for a nation….man ooh man..Germans are so fucking arrogant…manners ..they need to learn.
Example…go into a shop..how many stop and turn round and hold the door open for you..not many..it me me me..always come first.
They can be neighbours for 12 years and still call each other by their surnames..if you start work in a new environment…a lot of workers expect you to call them with their surname…so pathetic.
Germans are in general not a liked nation..go abroad..its fact..because that simple word always falls into place…arrogant.
They know everything better and can do everything better..if u have a conversation with 2 or 3…it's like a shouting match.whoever shouts the loudest the rest the rest have to listen.
Well I am looking forward to making 3 crosses…that's when I leave here and go back to England and Beatle to speak in a friendly environment again.

Germans tend to consider being polite and considerate to others as being phony. I've often seen them insult someone in an absolutely incredible manner and then look around as if they were actually expecting to be praised for their "uncompromising honesty." Of course, what they consider to be an expression of honesty is, in most cases, simply an expression of their own subjective opinion. They don't see that because of their own incredible arrogance. A typical German just can't conceive of the idea that his own opinion could ever be anything but an expression of pure, irrefutable fact (i.e., they just can't conceive of themselves ever being wrong on any given subject).

How children speak to their parents(even the adult children),the fact that they are seriously always right or have the better educated opinions(or so they think),how they know more about food than everyone else although German food sucks and most people are just shallow. I love my husband and am here only for him. The fact that a mall is as scares as good spices and that racism is supported by many. I also agree that germans have got to be among the worst drivers on the planet. Even the belief in God is really shallow here. Its just Me Me Me…I need more money, bigger cars, better clothes(lol@german fashion). My hubby is learning to be more humble everyday. If I wasn't crazy inlove…I would definately leave this country.

Germany sucks. I came to Germany because I was offered a job. The people are rude, introvert and antisocial- it’s very hard to be friends with Germans. The colleagues at work never cared about me. I mean, I took the plane, landed here a thousand miles away from home, I had never been to this country ever again, and no one ever had the politeness to ask me “ Have you adjusted? Is everything ok? Do you have any questions?” They know I don’t speak the language very well and I don’t have any serious work experience, but they will behave in an impolite manner when I make some mistakes at work (due to the lang. barrier and lack of exp.)
Apart from the working environment, they are not really nice when it comes to leisure time. I ‘ve gone out to bars alone, was friendly and tried to strike a conversation with the people there. Nothing. You can’t socialize with those people. Most women are bad-looking (not like the smiling chicks you see in photos from Oktoberfest, not even close). The good-looking ones are practically unflirtable. I have no idea why, and honestly, I don’t care anymore. People don’t want “foreigners” here. They may not express it openly but you can feel it.
Their education level is sad. They can’t even speak their own language. In almost every “Bundesland” there is a different dialect, and people use this instead of “hochdeutsch” (the official German language). They think they are the best at everything, which is a lie. Their whole lives are based on rules, rules, rules. Too many rules. You have to separate your trash correctly, and if you don’t and they find out, there is a fine. You have to shovel the snow outside your house, because if someone slips and falls, they can sue you. Rules are fine, but Germans seem to exaggerate.
The weather is also terrible. In the last two months I’ ve seen the sun for, like, 4 days, no more than 2-3 hours every day.
No, Germany is not the happy place that TV shows you during the Oktoberfest. Keep it remembered, any of you who think of coming here to live.

I hate the Germans and their fucking horrible country.

I sweared to myself to NEVER buy anything "Made in Germany", or even remotely linked to a fucking German corporation (most of whom greatly supported the nazi regime). So I'll never buy a BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, etc…they can sell their crap to somebody else. I'll buy a French, Italian or Japanese car instead, if any.

9 times out of 10, the people here are
- Arrogant
- Cold
- Ignorant, but they think that they know everything better
- Rude and unfriendly
- Workaholic
- Stubborn
- Fat and ugly (German food is the worst in the world, but of course they think that it's the best)
- The women are either ugly, or bitches (I wish them to remain alone for the rest of their life)
- Loud
- Repressed and aggressive
- They don't accept criticism ("Oh we are not rude, we are just direct…". NO! Go fuck yourself…you are a country of rude selfish assholes, but you cannot handle the truth, so you mask behind this "directness" excuse)
- They cannot speak English, and they think that German is an important language (outside of Europe is insignificant, but don't let them know the truth, they might get shocked…).
They have this attitude "Here in Germany we speak only German", because they are ignorant and closed-minded!

I'll never understand how a country that is much depended on exports to keep its economy afloat can treat foreigners like shit…but it's also the fault of the rest of the world, that keeps buying their crap (not me at least). We should put an embargo on this nation of cold-blooded imperialists, and send them back to the stone age, where they belong…

Thanks to the disastrous Harz-IV reform the average German can't even buy a new pair of shoes every 6 months, let alone the fucking cars that they build…but nobody complains, since the average German is a nazi robot that accepts anything that his/her government imposes him/her to do, like killing Jews ("I was just following orders").
I'm sure that if something like the Harz IV reform would be introduced in France, there would be riots and strikes for 1 month, and maybe some politician would even be killed, because the French are cool…but in Germany no, nobody protest and the government can do whatever they want. No minimum wage, 400 Euros/month minijobs…that's how they are competitive…

The Americans should have used the Atomic bomb against Germany, and let starve the population after the war…but because they are pragmatic and compassionate (two things that the average German doesn't even remotely know), they decided to let them rebuild a prosperous nation (thanks to Keynesian economic politics that now that bitch of Merkel says are wrong…fuck you bitch).

I love the fact that the Swiss and the Dutches openly hate the Germans…that's what they deserve.

Skilled foreigners…don't come to Germany, go somewhere else (lots of better countries in Europe…the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, etc…even Austria is better). This country doesn't deserve you…

I hate the EU

December 26th, 2012

There are many people living in Euroupe today who still hate Germans, unyet Euroupe is virtually led by this country. The EU is an absolute sham! Who does it really work in the interests of? Not the southern European countries that's for sure. Britain? Nope we have a trade deficit with Euroupe. The country that would suffer the most outside of the EU is Germany, because Germany is the EU. There export market would be hard hit. The cost of buying there stuff would be to high for many other European countries and there would be a return to more localized manufacturing across Euroupe which would create more jobs. The fundamental reason we are in this mess is because of Germany. The EU would have worked if it had stayed more less amongst the original member states in an optimal currency zone. But raising the net income of the EU to pay for the cost of German reunification meant that countries were allowed to join that were in no where near the economic benchmark required for the zone to work.

If other European nations had estbalished long ago the parliamentary systems and diplomatic skills Britain had and still has, Euroupe would work a damn site better. Gemany leads Euroupe blindly from one disatster to another.
Is'nt it about time the Nations of Euroupe stood on there own two feet again?

Found this discussion forum by accident, and SPC small, I can't agree with you more about Germany! I'm from Hong Kong and have been working in Germany for 1 year and I am so sick of this country. I believe there are some nice German in this country but unfortunately, those I met were all : rude / "pretend" to be open-minded and humble / don't respect other cultures / think they are the best but the most stupid ideas are all from them / not helpful and don't even care whether others need help / addicted to all unnecessary detail and paper work….I can just go on and on and create a list with 1000 reasons I hate this country.

The most irritating part to me is that, HK is really an international city, we never demand foreigners to learn our local language so to gain our respect, I mean, it's quite fair to speak Eng which is the most common language in this world, especially at work. But here in Germany, even it is a 4 people meeting, those Germans can, all of a sudden, switch to German till the end of conversation without noting a Eng speaker what happened and what conclusion it was until you really ASKED and PUSHED them for answers.

Not to offend any German here but, from my education and background, no human being would do this at work as it is a matter of RESPECT! A very basic one right? This is not a single incident but happen every single day and from their perspective, the only way out is me to learn and master the German language fluently so to communicate with them, WTF…sorry I'm here to work for 2 years only am I supposed to spend all my time for studying the stupid language?? On the other hand why don't they learn my language then? I believe it is quite fair for both me and the German to use a second language for communication, at least in HK culture, we are international enough and feel very comfortable to speak and write Eng in business setting, well, the German, they always talk about "being international" but they don't even write Eng email! I mean I am working in an international company and they do have business globally but unfortunately the headquarter is in Germany…..can you believe that an international company with international people working here doesn't even have Eng as a key communication language??? This is the most weird company I have ever worked for. In terms of business culture, HK is quite American like so we in general work fast and efficiently, but the German…you really have to kick their ass so to wake them up and not to focus on those silly unimportant detail and MOVE ON. Can they just stop addicting to long long long-winded meetings and talk talk talk and blah blah blah about concepts ONLY??

And as a frequent traveler….Germany is also the most boring and terrible place for traveling…especially Berlin! In this country, when you deal with the "customer service" people (especially from bahn / airline ), you have to forget you are educated people and all manner things or else you won't get any help and appropriate assistance. Me as an Asian look at lest 10 years younger than my age in German's eyes..which make my life even harder here. I have never scolded at anybody in my life, but here, yes I did that already.

Luckily I have only 1 year left and I can't wait leaving this hell..

And it's also not as safe and clean as their propaganda wants you to believe…
And there's also corruption here…and Merkel is an idiot that protects bankers at the expense of the German working-class, and of southern European countries…

Go fuck yourself Germany, the Allied should have bombed you like they did with Japan…instead of writing off your war debt in the 50s (if it wasn't for that, you'd still be a bankrupt country, like you deserved).

@Freebird: Obviously if you point out that in an international company your colleagues should speak to you in English…they'd probably tell you that it's your fault if you cannot follow them in German, since you should make an effort to learn their (insignificant and horrible) language.

They are always able to twist and turn around things…for fuck sake. It's always somebody's else fault.

And they don't even have a minimum wage, something that even the US have, for fuck sake! So I wouldn't take advices on how to run an economy and a society from a country without a minimum wage, and with 7 million of underemployed people working for 400 Euros/month (of course they don't appear in unemployment statistics, so that bitch of Merkel can claim that her country has a low unemployment rate…).

They were responsible for millions of deaths in WWI and WWII…and now the austerity programs imposed by them on southern Europeans (who they regard as sub-humans, like the Jews in WWII) are destroying the lifes of millions of people again!

Also, those areas of the former German reich were areas where support for the nazi party was the highest, and were anti-slavism and mistreatment of slavic people living there was the worst…not to mention how the Germans treated slavic people in the countries that they occupied.
Even today, they don't want to recognize the historical Polish minority living in Germany, while Poland recognizes the historical German minority living there…so as you can see the Germans are very hypocrite and dangerous…

They should actually always be grateful to the US, for the Marshall plan, and for having made sure that West Germany could rebuild itself and be a strong opponent of the Soviet-controlled DDR…

I'm Polish, my parents were born during WW2. Nazis wiped out most of their closest relatives, the ones that survived died from causes related to being held in German camps. We, however, tend to consider the generations that followed the war to be its casualties regardless of the nationality.

Germany happens to be my country of choice after having lived in US (university) UK (work) and Poland. I live in the southern part where the weather is great (brilliant wines) and people are friendly. But it's about what we hate in Germany.

Foreigners have very restricted access to public service jobs which are most of the jobs in science and education.

People in east parts are unfriendly. Berlin being quite extreme.

Living in Germany you might have to deal with large semi public service companies, like car insurance, health insurance, banks, railway. They are quite bureaucratic and make mistakes that sometimes cost you so much you wouldn't just let go. You might eventually claim your rights but they will make you regret you have started. I'm not sure it is any different elsewhere but it is in Germany they I experienced it.

Germans tend to ignore arguments but not authority. They will buy whatever bullshit you say as a Prof. Dr. h.c. and go into I-know-better mode if you forget to introduce yourself with your full title. Similarly, in legal fight no point trying yourself, however good argument and however well you prepare yourself. Just get yourself a good 800 euros per hour lawyer and the very sight of the stamp on the document makes them all candy sweet towards you.

That would be all I have to say.

Bart,
I would like to point out that your statement about the weather in southern Germany is purely a personal opinion (possibly influenced by the fact that you were posting from the UK). While it is true that southern Germany gets somewhat more sunshine (about 1700 hours per annum, on average) than much of Northwestern Europe, I would hardly call that "great" weather. That's still considerably less than even the least sunny parts of the US (the Pacific Northwest) get and what's more, it rains on more than half of all summer days, even in southern Germany. The rest of the country is worse, however…much worse. The region where I have the misfortune to have landed (middle Germany) gets around 1350 - 1450 hours of sunshine and more than 200 days per annum with appreciable precipitation (mostly drizzling rain). That, for your information, is worse than many parts of Scotland or Ireland.

I have lived in Germany for 25 years. I speak German accent-free and even give speeches in German. I have German citizenship and would fit the ideal of an "integrated" person.

Let me comment the original post:

1. Germany is a VERY repressive country. there is "free speech", but it is only a front. You can get in trouble for speaking out about almost anything that the government does.

You won't actually get in trouble, but it is less about the Government than about a certain diffuse kind of "consensus". If something is established to be "correct" in Germany, then it is regarded to be the only possible view in the world and anyone would treat you as a weirdo if you disagree (e.g. say something skeptical against the global warming theory, and everyone will roll their eyes).

2. Not all, but most Germans that I have had the misfortune of meeting, are very cold people. They will avoid friendliness at all costs.

You must understand that, in Germany, friendliness means weakness. The first person that smiles is thought to be giving in. Don't smile, behave with absolute rudeness, don't accept apologies, don't say "thank you" (even less "thank you very much", you wimp!), and you will blend in.

3. Prices are high, and Germans will charge for everything. I can not call customer service for my internet connection or even my cell phone contract without paying at least a 1 Euro connection fee, and 19 Euro cents per minute.

Indeed, Germany is an awfully expensive country.

4. The weather sucks except for three weeks out of the year. Period…

YES! The weather sucks so horribly, you just don't want to know.

5. The autobahn is extremely difficult to navigate without a GPS system.

That's true, but at least you are allowed to drive more than 80 mph here and there. Less and less, though.

6. The autobahn is constantly under repair, and the road crews are so lazy that it will take almost two years to repair a 10K stretch of road.

That is absolutely true. I don't know what the deal with that is, but the road repairs take decades (or so it appears).

7. Germans "know" better than you about any subject. Period…

Indeed, that is a funny thing. For example, Germans will insist of speaking the best English in the world (unless they speak with native English speakers, but even then sometimes they try to patronize, that is so awkward!). They would like you if you follow their opinions. Critical discussions are not welcome on any subject. Many Germans call themselves "critical", but they mean that they follow mainstream thinking (e.g. believing in global warming is considered "critical thinking", but arguing that atomic plants could help slowing it down is unanimously considered "stupid").

8. Germans do not understand the concept of privacy. The stereotypical nosy old woman, is an every day occurrence here.

Typical Germans think that they "don't have anything to hide". However, some of them are very aggressive about data privacy, but only if it is about foreign corporations (Google is bad, but the German secret service is thought to have right to access anything without asking and no one would object).

9. You have to pay to use the restroom in many public places, and it isn't cheap. I have even been refused the chance to use the restroom because I was two cents short.

That is true and really annoying. The prices are soaring, most restrooms at highways expect you to pay 70 cent for the restroom (you get 70 cent back when you eventually buy something, a trick that is really really upsetting me!)

10. Germans will call the police on you for almost anything.

True, but the police would not really help you in many cases.

11. When they do call the police, the police are allowed to take up to a 40 Euro bribe on the spot. Be prepared to pay off the police for anything. They will even drive you to the ATM to withdraw the money.

I have never heard of that, nor experienced it myself. Actually I believe that the German police is quite upright.

12. There are miles of paperwork to go through to do anything in this country.

Oh boy, that is a horrible issue. Germany is a country of bureaucrats. However, at least it is quite consistent. Try to cope with Polish bureaucrats, for example, notice the difference.

13. Germans are paranoid of violence. Don't buy any violent movies or video games in this country or you will be sadly disappointed by all of the censorship.

I don't understand this German angst. Why is that? Maybe they are afraid that if violence receives the same acceptance as environmentalism, people would go at each other.

14. BMW's aren't as nice as you would think.

BMW sucks. My wife has had several of them, the quality was low and the service awfully expensive. However, similar could be said about other German cars. Buy Japanese if you want quality. Still, since the Germans think that they can do about anything better then the rest of the world, people prefer buying German cars and will behave horribly on the Autobahn if you try to overtake a fast German car with a Japanese car.

15. Neither are Mercedes'.

Don't know anything about it. I'm still too young to drive one.

So, is Germany a good place to live? It depends on what you want. If you are poorly qualified and want to use social benefits, don't value individuality and your mentality helps you ignore being threated like a piece of crap, then Germany is the best place on the planet you can think of.

If you are highly qualified but don't speak German accent-free, then you should better stay home. In Germany, foreign accent is generally perceived as a sign of low-education and incompetence. Germany is NOT a immigration country, Germans actually reject foreigners in most cases in everyday life, even if there are many (mostly poorly qualified though) people in cities streets. Go to the USA, Canada etc. instead.

If you are a highly qualified professional and speak German fluently and accent-free, then you might want to take a look at Germany. However, if you are a non-EU-person, the red tape will probably kill you, because it is designed to keep low-qualified foreigners away (instead of attracting highly-qualified experts to Germany and making it easy for them to come here to stay).

Thanks Schmidt for summarizing all the points and reasons to hate those arrogant people, their awful country, and their system which is full of human rights violations and discrimination. I've been living in Germany for 7 years full of sorrow, sadness and bitterness. I was thinking that I'm suffering of paranois till I found this forum, many thanks to everyone here, thanks for expressing your feelings and wroting your opinions. Nobody would believe what happened to me, and if I just tell it to my frineds in the USA, they won't believe it.
Driving back from work yesterday late in the evening, stopped by a petrol station, and wanted to pay, to find that my account is blocked, calling the online banking to find out that the medical insurance - which is named Krankenkasse (IKK) has blocked my account without giving any reasons. I had to stay freezing in my car for around 3 hours in -8°C, and to call the people I know for help, till a friend (not a German) drove 40km to bring me some money. Back home at 4:00am; couldn't sleep, and couldn't believe that such a terrible situation could happen to a human being living in EU. Today early in the morning, and trying to find an explanation for such a silly action, I'm really shocked to find out that this Krankenkasse named IKK has a difference of 23,45 EUR - whatever extra charges they say without a logic explanation - to get from me, and which they never informed me of, has blocked my accounts and my life, without informing me or even bothering themselves to write me a letter of call me. The problem is they find in their old rules from the 1938 to 1945 - sentences to give them the right to do this. To steal your account information from the banks, block your accounts without informing you, and the worst thing is, to get their hands away of your account needs not less than a week - paper work and signatures of people who are everytime on vacations. The bank says there are hundreds of thousands in such situation named "Pfändung". Nobody thinks that a human being is in an Emergeny situation and has to survive a week without food. Nobody cares because they are the GERMANS, they know everything better than all other humans. Where are the human right organizations here??? Why do they treat people like shit???

Dear Suffering,
if your accounts were seized (i.e., you were the subject of a "Pfaendung"), then you must have received multiple warnings and court orders beforehand. There are precisely defined procedures which must be followed before a Pfaendung can be carried out. I'm guessing you either didn't understand the warnings or you chose to ignore them, because you thought that the worst that could happen to you would be that your credit rating in Germany would be taken down a notch.

I'm not exactly in love with Germany myself — as evidenced by the fact that I'm even on this site — but some of the comments on this page are pretty screwy. So, I thought I'd clarify a couple of matters here.

The comment further up the page about the police payoffs (where they'll even drive you to the ATM) was probably also a misinterpretation. For traffic violations (even those committed while riding a bicycle or jaywalking), police in Germany can, in lieu of an official citation, levy a fine that is immediately payable at the scene of the violation. By paying that fine, you can avoid having the violation recorded on your driving record. On the other hand, it is an admission of guilt and precludes all further legal recourse on your part. However, you can decline and ask to be sent an official citatiton, to which you can then plead not guilty and perhaps get a trial in traffic court. That usually ends up being more expensive, though.

Dear Nomine Malum, I haven't received any warnings or letters, nothing. I've lost 3 days running from one city to the other to find out that the "Pfaendung" was a mistake, still in your country, people suffer because of others mistakes, and because unfortunately, the education level is low, as they mentioned us here, enough to say that most of the children don't finish their schools, or leave schools after the 10th class to get some training in a company or in the government, which is not enough. But when you discuss it with someone, you get a funny answer like "our schools are better than the universities in the states", or "we are born with all the knowledge we need to live with", it's really something like believing ones lies; or something like the action of "hiding heads in the sand" like an ostrich - as I mentioned. The problem is, you'll never get an apologies or even a sorry, this word doesn't exist in your dictionary, everyone can just do a mistake without caring, because first of all, he/she knows everything better than others, and because he'll never get punished for it. The worst thing would be to loose the job and sit at home and get easy money as support from the government, which millions are already doing, and who has to pay this all, the poor working people who have to pay the half of their salaries as support for the lazy persons. Is this normal? Wake up people, this is destroying your economy, don't you notice the long list of companies closing or moving out of your country every day.

and by the way Nomine Malum, it is not as you say, a procedure or a court order, it's the first time in my life to face such an evil thing, the same old system that used to horrify the people and catch them, is practicing the same way, a bit different, not catching the people themselves, but catching their information and bank accounts and money. I was investigating around it, there is no court involved as you say, and for what, for a damn shit mistake caused by an employee, who is not able to calculate correct and caused a difference of 23 Euros. The system gives all the medical insurance companies the right to seize you, and it depends on the people working there, if they are kind enough :-( to inform you or not, otherwise they go through the customs "Zollamt" (I don't know why), they contact all the banks asking if you have accounts there and directly block your accounts. So big words like "Human Rights" or "Data Protection" are nothing to think of in this country.

Hey Suffering,
don't call Germany MY country, because it isn't. I'm a Canadian whose parents were German. I wound up over here because of a series of unfortunate circumstances and I am currently trying to wrap everything up here so that I can leave again. It sounds like you were the victim of a bureaucratic screw-up. That can happen anywhere, but you are right in that Germans generally HATE to admit it when they've made a mistake and apologizing to someone for a mistake made seems to be a foreign concept, altogether.

Okay. Actually, screw Germany. Screw it so hard in the ass. It's a relief to see that they're completely overrun with Turks and to know that in a thousand years no one will even know what a "German" was. It should be that way because we should have frankly nuked them back in '45. It's upsetting that they even exist, and the only consolation is that they're completely consigned to the dustbin of history as a people, a nation and a language.

Being sick of oompah-loompah music and bad food I decided to go to the Hard Rock Cafe in Munich tonight, thinking at least I could get a little American food and sit at a bar instead of a long table full of sourpuss serious-people. So I did, I sat at the bar. A band came on and started warming up, some horrible painful German early '90s thing, think what would happen if the nihilists from Big Lebowski tried to start a Guns'n'Roses cover band. So they played for about 3 minutes and I said to the bartender, "are these guys from around here?" He said, "I don't know." I said, "well, at least their songs are short." No laugh; no nothin. A look of anger mixed with disgust. "That was the sound check. They start at 9:00, not until 9:00". I said, "well, I'll try to get out of here before then." Again, no laugh.

There was a bartender who was actually serving me, and he was English. Been living in Munich for 6 months. I talked to him a little and it was a huge relief to be able to joke around with somebody. But after I ordered he disappeared. A few minutes after I got my food (ribs!) he came back and I said I thought he'd left me to deal with all these germans, I tried to crack a joke and they all just glared at me. He said yeah, want to hear a good German joke? I said sure. He goes…

"What's the difference between a Jew and a boyscout?"

Bada-bing.

I'm Jewish.

I walked out after my meal and leaned on the Jewish memorial for a bit, which is sort of a reminder of how they got rid of us and I guess for them how nice it is to all be German now. I thought about how my people probably tried real hard to blend in and be friendly but, it's not like they give you a chance, they just act like you're not even a human being. So of course it makes sense that Jews kept their own culture and kept to themselves; these people won't even talk to you. Then I keyed six BMWs and Mercedeses on the way home because we already spent a billion dollars to bomb them and billions more to feed their social services so they could sit on their fat beer drinking asses and complain about how they got bombed. THANK GOD I am leaving this country tomorrow, I hope it burns to the ground, I will NEVER go back to Germany or buy anything German as long as I live.

I asked the girl at the front desk of the hotel if it was hard to live in Munich or if she thought the place was a little cold sometimes. "No, not for me," she said, "it's easy." And then stared at me like the conversation was clearly over, like I had an octopus on my head, until I wandered off in shame for talking to her, or for being a Jew, or whatever.

I really hope they all burn in hell.

They care only about money and exploitation of others. A lot of foreigners here do slave-like jobs that pay very little (the smallest wages in western europe) and have very bad working conditions. That is called "Zeitarbeit" - this is the word for modern day slavery here, and millions of poor people are working for those companys for pennies. Those companys othen brake all laws for working-time etc, and they say that when you do not like this, you can leave and live on the street. This way many immigrants from eastern-europe etc are kept here as half-slaves.

When you have a german work-partner, than you always feel like you are dumb, and you make everything wrong. That is normal, because german pearson always thinks he/she is superior to you!! This is extrmemely disturbing. After some time your just can not stand it any more, your will be totally stressed out! There is no way you would find a friend here, they just hate everyone!

Germans are very SELFISH, arrogant, rude, xenophobic, and cruel. At the same time they are very cowardly, men are like women, or gay. They are often shockingly cruel to animals and other people.

They are the most ugly people i have ever seen in my life, and i have travelled quite a lot. Something is wrong with them genetically. Most germans are heavy smokers, they smoke everywhere, even in elevator! They are the most unsporty nation i have ever met, most people are fat here, eat pizza, drink alcohol, smoke and do not do any sports at all. That is disgusting!

There is not much going on here. Most people just sit at their apartments and do not go outside at all! The streets are totally empty when you live outside of the city centre or in small town. Jogging or walking is not known for germans. They only dirve with train/car or sit at home. When i go outside for a walk, i am always alone at the street. That is very weird and creepy.

After living in Germany for 1 year i do not recomend this shitty place for anyone !

i have travelled the world - literally - and, even as a white person, i have never EVER experienced such rasism, discrimination, cold heartedness and xenophoby as in germany. after 2 years of living here i´m ready to throw in the towel. i have learned the language in record time (less than a year!!) and i admit that i do not speak it perfectly. i am proud to say that even my accent is undetectable to non germans, but germans in genereal - and surprisingly to me, some so called friends as well - make it a point to ¨not understand me¨ and be obvious about it too. it has to do with minor grammar things and sorry for the aryans (which by the way was such a dumb choice of nazi propaganda, because aryans, as ethnic group, come from india pakistan, that area - hahahaha!), but between someone who has this as native language (germans) and someone who speaks fluently 5 languages other than german (me) i can guarantee that there is no way in hell or heaven they don´t understand unless: 1 they are all deaf, 2 they are all stupid or 3 they are just mean and nasty people.

i´m experiencing this from people of ALL ages and social backgrounds and as a human being, i cannot believe that the nation has hearing problems overall. i also find it hard to believe that they could be all stupid. i noticed that this happens every time they disagree but don´t have the guts to speak their minds up - i put it down to cowardness or lack of arguments. therefore i stick by the 3rd posibility as true. they really are mean and nasty.

i have mentioned before ¨so called friends¨ because i have experienced their general fakeness and more than that, i have observed it between true-blue germans. we have the expression ¨a friend in need is a friend indeed¨ (in/deed as play on words) but no german i met has grasped the concept; and if anything is discussed about the issue, they will nod their heads, mostly say nothing and change the subject at light speed. they clearly do not agree with the idea and their actions, more than anything, prove it. as soon as a german, let alone foreigner friend, has a problem (a serious one) all of his german best friends no longer want anything to do with him again, until the problem is resolved. again, i have witnessed this accross age segments and social backgrounds, between germans. well, the so called friendship seems to resume once the problems are resolved and help is no longer required. that is coldhearted. and yes, smth like that happens in other countries too, but such behavior is always sanctioned, the difference in germany is that, not only people don´t frown upon it, but it´s the norm. and that is terrible.

and yes, i have also noticed the thing about memorial monuments - waaaah, waaah, we were bombed ant this is so that we don´t forget the atrocities - but may i point out that there´s not a single word about WHO committed them - that´s what i call new propaganda. they do play the victim a lot. offensive is the best defensive, right? and the more time u spend with them the more they feel comfortable to open their mouths around you, an what comes out is so much negativity and hatred - especially against muslims. i suppose since the jews became off limits by law, they had to find another target to direct their venom agains - muslims, africans, blacks no matter where they come from, and immigrants as a whole. yeah, sure, wherever there is immigration there will be issues, but such VENOM as in germany i have never witnessed.

and another observation: you NEVER-NEVER-NEVER se a black or asian (basically any other skin colour other than white), or god forbid muslim looking person (they are the modern pet hate) working with your local townhouse, district council, finantzamt and all other such offices, except as maybe cleaners!!! even if they´ve given up their birth citizenship and have the german one.

and they do indeed know everthyng better than you. my advice is when you see them getting up on their high horses and they get way to arrogant, just tell them: well, if germans were so great and so much smarter and better than everyone else, then how come you lost the war - TWICE !?!?!?!?

i guarantee you that will put them immediately back into their place, and don´t worry about their friendship, 1: they´re not worth having to begin with and 2: they will come back to kiss your arssse as soon as they need something from you.

so, to wrap it up, yeah, germans are rasist, cold-hearted and xenophobes (big time), mean, nasty, vicious, very good at distorting the facts. somebody asked earlier wether the youth today should pay for the mistakes of their forefathers… i say a big fat YES! first of all, because what they did to the world was not a mistake but the obvious result of their mentality and their approach to life and relations. (i.e. well, they really do think the opposite and they made a mistake by doing the contrary). the same crimes (apart from genocide) are commited against non germans by the young these days.

it´s clear why: children learn from their parents and from their environment. and as long as i don´t see a percentage of public employees of immigrant backgrount that is equal to the percentage of immigrants in germany, it is clear that the same crimes except genocide are commited against non germans by the germans. yes! racism is a crime, discrimination is a crime, and so on. they´r no victims here, they´r just perpetrators who still have to be punished because they haven´t learned their lesson yet.

a recent article in spiegel onine (see website link, VERY INTERESTING!). a quote that jumped to attention was "We invited the guest workers and thought they would leave again soon" . well how bloody arrogant is that??? this is the kind of moral spew (coming out of the mouth of the chief of Berlin Institute) that fundamented slavery: do the shit work for a group of people and not get much in return, if anything - sorry, germans dudes and dudettes of all ages, but the rest of the world has evolved from that, while you are obviously still stuck in the medieval age. you need to catch up with us and stop bitching and moaning.

And german double standards are always such a pearl! for instance: "Every day I see the suffering of Muslim girls and women who never get a chance in their conservative Muslim world to take part in German life," - and then cherry on the cake - "No democracy can allow the inferiorization of women". hmmmm…. ok, how exactly are germans treating their CITIZENS of immigrant background?? i want to see them at information counters as well as in middle and high positioned jobs of ALL public offices, not just cleaning their toilets!

and the germans still have the cheeck to moan that immigrants don´t integrate themselves, live in ghettos and don´t speak the language. what a load of kwatsch mit sosse! well, how often do they give the migrants an emotional break? how many of you germans have immigrands @ your place and make them feel welcome?? no, the hugely vast majority of germans don´t, they are too arogant now, just as they were after the war. read again: "We invited the guest workers and thought they would leave again soon". such arrogance is inadmissible in the 21st century. full stop.

and for those of you who are not all that familiar with the german history i will point out the fact that germany is still a country under occupation in it´s special way (see the american and french troops that are still stationed here). why do you think that is, because germany is such a wonderful place that they don´t want to leave? no. and did you know that german citizens are not allowed to elect their President directly? - because it is against the constitution. and did you also know that it is ¨against the constitution¨to try and alter the constitution itself in any way shape or form? and do you know that that is exactly why foreign troops are stationed in germany - to make sure this law is obeyed and nobody comes up with stupid ideas again?

a while after the first world war, germans were kinda left to their own, and look what they´ve done! second world war, and hitler, and the nazi genocide. that all sprung from the german mentality which is sadly still representative of germany as a whole. so basically it was: fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. foreign troops are here to make sure no other hitler gets spewed onto the world again. that is why the masses are not allowed to ellect their president directly and now german is allowed (again it´s in the constitution, i suggest you read it) to ever again have absolute power. that was no mistake, what they´ve done, it was simply a crime. they were left on parole so to speak, and they fucked up again. it is only right they serve the sentence.

the perpetrators today are all those germans who discriminate and think themselves to be in any way a superior being to others because of their skin, accent, and ancestry. they are commiting the same crime even though they are now at least trying to be more discreet about it.

germany does have a 21 century economy - IT WAS MADE THAT WAY BY THE IMMIGRANTS - but has also a medieval mentality which tries to silently drag the world back to way before the american civil war (i´m not american by the way). i say silently drag us back because of the overall and CONCERNING PROPAGANDA germans are undertaking again by raising monuments to the ¨atrocities¨ without also saying who committed them in the first place!! that is sooooo cunning. and yet another piece of evidence that they haven´t learned their lesson and further generations must pay the consequences of such crimes, and hey, we´re not talking here about stealing a loaf of bread, OK?

Because it took generations to teach them not to get up to that kind of s#$t openly. but they still keep those stupid ideas in their heads. and children learn from parents, crap like that is transmitted from generation to generation for a loooong time. and what the young people today have been already taught is that the world was wrong, and they, the german minority on this planet were right to comit the crime. and guess what, that´s exactly what they will teach their children in turn. that is why it will take a lot of generations to get rid of this s%&#t they´ve got up in their heads. and yeah, it has to be done, because every chance they get, they try to steer backwards - read again: "We invited the guest workers and thought they would leave again soon". slavery and nazy genocide, discrimination, double standards, rasism, arrogance, etc, are dishes allways present on the german dinner table and they all smell so good to them because it´s the smell of familiarity. they need to be made to learn to enjoy eating other dishes, such as real equality (between citizens of all background), acceptance, tollerance, openness, taking responsibility and growing a back bone.

on top of that, with the second world war germans have proved to the whole world that if left to their own devices and not sanctioned, they tend to f%$#k up again, they can´t be trusted untill we hear from a VAST PROCENT OF IMMIGRANTS how great germany is! For all of the above mentioned reasons, i agree, yeah germany is (in a galaxy) faaaar-faaaar away behind civilized and evolved mentality, clearly not a great place to anyone other that germans, and for all of the above i hope it is also clear why nobody likes them anymore once they´ve scratched the facade

I have lived here in Germany for almost a year. This is the worst place EVER!! Everyone is rude. Germans smell really bad. You have to pay to use the tolet and to park. I live with a Germen in his 40's. He smells bad even worse when he uses cologne. He picks his nose then eats it!! He's rude, he stares at me while I eat. He goes through my stuff. When he showers he takes 2 mins. Saves water but smells bad. He doesn't use a cloth to wash his body. He never stands when he pees he sits like a girl. Germans are always in your personal space. This is the worst place I've ever lived. The laws suck here and there's nothing fun to do here. Nothing is translated into English. Makes it very hard if your new here. Don't look for these jack ass's to help you. They will walk or run you over. There the worst people ever !! I'm part German. No wonder my family split from here to live in the states. Trust me you don't want to live here. I just gave up everything here my job car etc to get the hell out of here. Don't make the same mistake I did. Stay away from Germany !!!

Years ago I was in Köln, where people were generally cold. My 7 years of German had gotten a bit rusty, but it would have made no difference anyway: Whether asking for directions, a light for a cigarette, or how to use public transit, I rarely got an answer. The curious thing was Germans usually listened carefully to me, but they then walked or turned away without saying a thing. Asking fellow travelers or middle-aged Turks was how I found things out. I have been told by other travelers (and German colleagues) that this is typical for northern Germany.

It was quite a contrast to the much warmer Dutch (even in Amsterdam), whose border was not that far away.

The Roman history museum in Köln had only German explanations. It's their country and language, sure, but I found that a bit odd. Köln is a large city with plenty of tourists who probably don't speak fluent German but might well be interested in the museum's offerings.

Returning to Köln from a daytrip, I mistakenly took the wrong train (a faster, costlier one) than that for which I had a ticket. The DB ticket guy was a bastard! He got angry, refused to listen to me and never bothered to attempt to facilitate any communication, liked shoving his little officious ticket box in my face, stabbed my tickets with his fat finger, and was as noisy as possible to demonstrate his self-importance. It took a while before someone behind me explained exactly what it was all about, so I could shift from asking "What?" and "Why?" to simply paying. JapanRail has never treated me so shabbily. I hope DeutscheBahn has since privatized (and taken customer service lessons from, well, just about anyone else) and fired that Teutonic turd.

I think the rudeness and small-mindedness of Germans appears worse because we expect people living in a well-ordered, safe, and prosperous society to be charitable and humane. If this was Albania we wouldn't begrudge the coolness of the man on the street toward strangers. But Germans acting rude and selfish and nasty and overly particular about little rules seems really inappropriate and unseemly.

I would not recommend anyone to Visit Germany and beware if you think that youll try to figure this place out by yourself, a broken clock is right twice a day and you'll soon notice that this place is not whatever you thought it would be. Youll find yourself alienated, harrassed, ridiculed, disrespected and marginalized which by no means they intend or are aware of what they are making you feel cause these folks are devoid of any feelings.

Germany is really a terrible place to live in. They treat others like second class humans. Its crazy.
And Germans only know how to work like Robobts. But their Social Skills are below zero. IF you come here: Expect the coldest people on earth.
And my God are they arrogant. Its like they think they won the World wars.

Germans like taking not giving. Germans love themselves and despise the rest. Some have learnt to hide it others not. Germans embody some of the worst human traits: arrogance, cruelty, selfishness. They are in danger of extinction though since they don't make enough babies. After all making babies (not just having sex) is an act of generosity and if you just think about your appearance, finances and carrier prospects after having babies you might end up not having them at all: In the end nature balances things out.

This dump is also full of littering…maybe the historic city centers are kept clean, but just step outside of them, and you find lots of disgusting rubbish and littering all over the place.

But of course the germans insist that "in germany everything is clean"…because they want to delude themselves that germany is like Switzerland, while it's not…I lived in both countries, and there is an abyss in term of cleanliness, standard of living, politeness of the locals, infrastructure, fairness toward foreigners…not to mention the high wages.

I also lived in the UK, and the level of littering there was also lower than in germany, not to mention the politeness of the locals…

Fed Up in Germany

April 17th, 2013

Hmmm. What I hate about Germany. It's not the big stuff - like what happened during WWII. Although I am pretty convinced that a society of know-it-alls who really, truly do think they are the best probably had something to do with trying to take over the world and create the master race. But that was then.
I have been here for over 23 years (German husband), and it's just the day-to-day shit that has worn me down so that I actually feel the need to write in such forums. Kind of sad, I know. Most of what I hate has been mentioned above. But a couple of other things - this whole garbage separation thing. I am expected to put my stinking rotted fruit and veggies in newspaper and throw it in my bin where it stinks and molds and spawns maggots for 2 whole weeks before they pick it up. And if I would dare to put it in plastic, I could be fined up to 40 euros.
I teach English to German adults. When trying to teach polite phrases like - I was wondering if…, or - Could you please tell me - I am met with either blank stares or "well that's stupid and I will never say that."
Both my kids were singled out by teachers who thought there was something wrong with them. With my daughter, it was the art and religion teacher, who commented on her lack of aggressiveness when standing in line to get art supplies. She said all the other children just went in front of her and took all the stuff before she got a chance. When I asked her why she, as an adult and teacher, did not step in and do something about it, she said my daughter needed to learn to fend for herself. This was in the first grade, btw.
My son was in kindergarten, age 3, when the teacher called me in for a conference, suggesting I get psychological help for him. Reason? When other kids tried to push or hit him, he hid under the table. This behavior, in her opinion, was not normal.
Going back to the lack of politeness. They just do not get it that if someone makes a mistake and says sorry and there is nothing he can do about it anyway, to just let it be. The good German will point out how terrible it was, how inconvenienced, etc., and try to make you feel as small as possible. To all Germans reading this - WHY DO YOU DO THIS?????
O.k. last one I promise. And again, this is directed at the Germans I hope will read this - what is so hard about complimenting someone's house, or clothes, or hair or anything? I have actually had German women come in my house and tear it apart. Nothing matches, it is too small, your bathroom is so impractical. Reeeally?
So, the sheer fact that so many people have written here, and that so often one reads the same things, means that there is a lot of truth to it.

You can never trust them, they're just slaves to money, you can never trust a german woman, because she'll betray you and think she has the right to do it and it's a normal thing - they call it freedom. They have no idea what do Ethics and Principles of Life mean. Words like love, respect, fairness, kindness, politeness, mercy, loyalty and honesty don't exist in their dictionary or have different meanings. It's pity that such a community exists.

I have worked in Luxembourg for the last 12 years, lived in Lux for 7.5 years and lived in Germany for 4.5 years. I actually find the French much more arrogant, on the train commuting to Luxembourg, German's will speak English with me, as my German isn't fluent enough to hold down a intricate conversation, however at work in Luxembourg, they speak French in the canteen, even though they know I don't speak French. I do agree that German's are not the most openly hospitable people in the World, coming from Scotland we are much more outgoing. However you can make sweeping generalisations about all races, for instance regarding queuing, this is a European problem, the French are just as bad as the Germans at not having the common respect to stand in an orderly queue. A lot of the comments on here are lambasting Germans for a war that ended nearly 70 years ago, I wonder how many of the negative comments come from people who actually lived through the war. My point being that most Germans nowadays weren't alive during the war, so couldn't do anything to prevent Hitler's totalitarian regime. Yes these actions were atrocious, but people forget quite easily that Mussolini from Italy was just as bad a tyrant as Hitler and they worked in tandem, but you don't hear many people saying "I hate Italian's because of the war"….

Ex-German

August 18th, 2013

Ok, here is my story.

I was born in Germany 33 years ago, my parents are from Afghanistan and
I reproach my mother for giving birth to me in this pit of misery ("Jammertal"/ Valley of misery).

I read through ALL the comments and they are not only true, but just scratching merely on the surface of what is going on in this madhouse ("Der ganz normale Wahnsinn"/ The all too normal madness).

For I was born and raised here, it took me a couple of years to realize how bad the situation in Germany really is. I always felt alienated, but hey, that can happen everywhere. And one of the best things that Germans can do, despite of building machines, because they are machines indeed, is making up apologies for their miserable conditions of life ("Die Not zur Tugend machen"/ Making misery to virtue).

You will need at least a whole book to summarize and explain why germans are like they are. I will keep it short and simply and just state, that an evil spirit is inhabiting this forsaken country and its people. I was corrupted by them being exposed to their inhuman educational system and their corrosive behavior and beliefs. It took me a year living in Italy to understand what a human being really is.
The first article of the Grundgesetz (something like a constitution) states, that the dignity of a human is untouchable ("Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar"). I first thought, wow that's great. But my life here has shown me that it really means, that there is NO dignity at all here, therefore you cannot touch it.

I know its ridiculous, but i feel like a Jew in the 1930s. In history lessons about the Nazis, there was always a thought of mine saying, why didn't all of them escape? How couldn't they see this coming? Now i know why. Because Germany is like a swamp, the people here a like krakens with vampiric tentacles that suck out all your life, your dignity, your bravery, your free will, your kindness s l o w l y. Day by day, bit by bit ("langsam aber sicher!"/ Slowly but certainly).

Folks that defend Germany are either naive or Nazis themselves.
Why do germans make friends so slowly? Because it takes them time to trust each other, it takes time to drive their tentacles into your soul. Once they are in, they will not let you go easily. That is what is called long lasting friendships ("Wer solche Freunde hat, braucht keine Feinde"/ With such friends, who needs enemies).

After graduating from high school i hated the USA, because that is what they feed you in school. Deep inside a lot of germans were happy about the 911 attacks. Finally the USA suffered the same as or at least something similar to what happened to them. Try to read the "Lied der Nibelungen" and you can grasp some of the cruelty that is the living standard here.

After spending only three months in Australia, coming back to germany felt like coming home to a prison of madness. I will definitely emigrate to an english speaking country, no matter how much it will cost me. I do not want my future children to experience the same shit i went through.

Today my german flatmate banged at my door yelling at me, because i had forgotten to change back the mouse configuration of his computer from left to right handed after using it to play a stupid strategic war game of his.
I yelled back at him to be not so german and to address such things in a mannerly way. He later crawled on his knees begging for forgiveness for his behavior.

This is how you have to treat them. Treat them like shit or get treated like shit. Better: GET THE HELL OUT OF GERMANY.

Enough of the hating today. Don't become like them. Have compassion with their tortured souls. But keep that gun in your hand, for they could perceive your empathy as weakness and you can strike them down again, when they attempt jump at your throat.

I have been living in Germany for some years now, and am married to a German. Every negative thing everybody has spoken about here about Germany is TRUE. I do speak the language. But language or not, they are rude, cold and paranoid idiots. KNOW IT ALL including my husband. Cant win an argument with them. Appointment freaks. Its a frikking Termin for every damned little thing. If you are one minute late they give you the bad look. You cant joke around or cut up with them. They are simply just uptight about life. But talk about Hitler and they freak the hell out lol. Their attitude towards Americans is appalling. They feel they are better than us and feel that they need to show power. In fact, Germans are really a weak society. They are followers not leaders. That is why I always tell them, that Hitler was able to control the minds of so many millions to doing what he ordered to be done. No strong people would have allowed this. They drink like fish and often only can chillout once loaded. You invite them to your home, but they dont invite you back. They are greedy and yet complain that you cooked too much food. They do not exchange presents with you. you have to PAY to pee, but as soon as you cross over to France when travelling its free to pee. Germans are money hungry, you must pay for every thing. The word Free falls on deaf ears. I have never seen a more greedy country like this. I live here cuz I am married to a German, but other wise, I wouldnt have chosen here to live. The coldness of the people is unbelievable. They claim when you speak their language its better. HELL NO ITS NOT. Cold is cold. Also, they are the nosiest people on the planet. They want to know everything about you and seldom share their lives with you. I dont like the culture, but the landscape is pretty.

Its weird but i have been in the southern part of German, stuttgart and ludwigsburg and the weather really isnt all that bad. Its beautiful here and most of the people ive meet or interacted with have been very nice and good to me. I am american and german but most of my life was in America. My family here are always fighting and screaming and it seems normal to them. To me this is not normal at all. I think that most of the posts I have seen are from the northern part of Germany. but i have to say that i do also wanna go back home. Just not the same as living in America although I think america sucks to. I live in va. I have also noticed that Germany tends to make everything German related such as names and places and things from other countrys. German men are selfish and insensitive with women because they are brought up to always put them selves first, the culture does not encourage any empathy or emotional understanding of others and basically I would get out while you can if you are in any sort of relationship with a German…currently I am stuck in one because of my children and am living a nightmare as they don't change they get much worse with time. Know the truth

Looking further into the German psyche (in reference to rhyme & reason's question); their selfishness is only the tip of the ice berg…what you really need to look out for is the sadistic way a German will manipulate and use power to make you feel miserable if you don't submit to their authority, opinions ect. Exercising your free will can be sen as a personal affront to their ways and they'll crush you for it…the need to dominate and/or destroy the other seems at the core of this maladaptive society. i started like you with a healthy curiosity
about their sad and cold ways …that was ten years ago…now I have seen through the layers to the real darkness that lies beneath. And if you are expecting your partner to have some insight or self awareness about this you'll never get them to admit anything, they will either avoid, divert the conversation or lie and make you feel worse for trying to understand them.

I thought it was just me, and after living in Berlin/traveling throughout this Country for one year, I can honestly say…these people are the WORST. Everything that is said in this forum is true to a fault. There's a reason that no one likes the Germans…even the more Well Traveled and 'Cultured' of the lot can't stand their own. To the point that I will now only associate with Germans that live in Germany Seasonally. These "Part Time" Germans are the ones that: have a real Education, speak Multiple Languages (including Business English), have rewarding Creative careers, and are Sophisticated enough to hold real conversations and are capable of Critical Thought.

Then there are the "Full Time" Germans. These sorry pieces of White Trash are the ones that; have never left their little Dorfs until University, think Berlin is the center of the Universe, have never had more than ONE type of employment or none, think EVERYTHING German is better, have the Social Skills and Charm of Mayonnaise, speak only one language…and expects even Tourist to know it FLUENTLY. These are the type of Germans that are giving the Country a bad name. As far as the History…WHO CARES?!!!!! There's a Starbucks within walking distance from almost every Jewish/German Memorial…our friend 'History'…she aint present. Can we just fucking get over it and join this Century?! Nope. Because Change, Progression, Motivation are abstract concepts to Automatons. The mere thought of these tangible Ideals would mean that maybe…just maybe…the current Mentality is wrong.

And we ALL know that these fuckers HATE being Wrong.

This is why they won't ever change, this is why they fear Modernization, Gentrification, Globalization and Multiculturalism. It's because they have become so damn marginalized to the point that they cannot ADAPT. They are a dying Breed…just look at the numbers Birth/Suicide/Depression/Obesity/Mobility/Wages, all indicative of a people that are skating on the edge of annihilation. (Karma is a bitch no?) I've seen more protest for Refugees in Berlin than I have seen for Fair Wages. How in the world do these people exist in the 21st Century?!

They are annoying, whiny, miserable, complacent, FAT, obsessed, uncouth, classless, and HORRIBLY unimaginative. For a place that prides itself on Order & Organization…these people are either slobs or Hoarders. I have YET to have been into a Full Time Germans' home and felt at ease. And I honestly believe that 'Furniture' is a bourgeois concept in Berlin, along with Style, Grace, and Cadence. Nothing these people do make sense. From their horrid Hipster lifestyles and Tastes, to their Values and Priorities. EVERYTHING is a Contradiction with Germans. They want Privacy…yet keep their noses in other peoples business. They want Freedom…yet everyone should think the "German Way". They are Over-educated to the point of Stupidity.

Even the most destitute from the poorest Countries have enough sense to know how to milk this Country for what it's worth…then LEAVE. And I cant think of a more deserving group of people. Germans SUCK.

(Although it's a pretty Country Naturally…for 4weeks a year.)

Interesting site. I'm half German Half Italian, my Mother was a German war refugee from East Prussia. I was born in Germany, grew up in America, spent two years in Germany in the mid 80's and now have spent the last 10 years in Germany and will probably be here for several more years. Maybe I can add to the conversation.
My ex-wife is German and my fiance is German.
Hate is a strong word, I will reserve it for other things. There are things I like about Germany and things I don't.
Most of Germany's problems are caused by Germans.
Money does seem to matter more to them than things like Love, Family, etc.
They are constitutionally incapable of admitting fault or being wrong.
They think they are more intelligent than they are, especially with matters like politics, travel, religion, etc.
They interpret kindness as weakness.
They find it hard to say "sorry" that would be to admit fault.
They are quick to play victim, (like a soccer player barely being touched and acting like he got his knee cap kicked off!)
They are intensely Jealous of others (in matters of looks, what type of car you have, and especially money)
Here are some words that have no equivalent in English (Schadenfreude) it means to take delight in Someone else's misfortune. This is very common in Germany! To withhold love as a form of punishment (Liebesentzug)
It does not bother me that Germans (and most Europeans) consider themselves intellectually and Morally Superior to Americans. Ive been to over 30 countries, fought for America in two wars, and studied Comparative Religion and Psychology. I know the average German only views the world through what they see on T.V. and in print, nothing more, just what they are told, (fed)
So having said all that, I think the thing I find most disturbing about the way Germans treat each other, is how they can disregard a family member, Neighbor, Friend, etc, over Money! I have, sadly, seen this alot, and it shows an inherent lack of Love, Compassion, and Understanding.
Hope this adds to the conversation.
