Latin America Travel Budget

…I should have about $10,000 before I leave [for Central and South America]. Do you think that is enough for about a year?

And any general advice in regards to Latin America? I Plan on doing some classes in Guatemala in order to refresh my memory of my language skills I have lost.

Craig's Response:
Sure–US$800/month is a solid budget for travel in Latin America. Keep a close eye on the funds and you shouldn't have any problem at all.

I found that the 50/25/25 rule works well in Central America–50% room, 25% food, 25% transport, Internet, and/or entertainment. Spending US$8 on room? Expect to spend US$16/day.

If you plan on drinking with any regularity, add US$10/day to the total.
