Hungarian "Shit Shelf" Toilets

A repeatedly odd sight in Hungary is the older style of toilets that seem to be half chamber pot, half modern toilet.

This design is/was quite popular, though I can't imagine why. Perhaps there was a revolution against the occasional splash back from the water in the bowl. All I know is that not since digging a hole in the topsoil or using a squat toilet in Asia have I been able to so accurately gauge the consistency and volume of my bowel movements. Just lovely.
