Food Poisoning in the Dominican Republic

Traveler advisories and reported cases of food poisoning and foodborne illness in the Dominican Republic.

Have you fallen ill from food or drink, had food poisoning in the Dominican Republic, or know the details of another traveler who has? Please submit information about what was consumed, where, or what others should avoid consuming.

True food poisoning occurs when a person ingests a contaminating chemical or a natural toxin, while most cases of foodborne illness are caused by a variety of foodborne pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or parasites that contaminate food. Such contamination usually arises from improper handling, preparation, or food storage.

Symptoms typically begin several hours to several days after ingestion and can include one or more of the following: nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headache, or fatigue. In most cases the body is able to permanently recover after a short period of acute discomfort and illness. However, foodborne illness can result in permanent health problems or even death, especially in babies, young children, pregnant women (and their fetuses), elderly people, sick people and others with weak immune systems.

It's typically in the best interest of a business to keep their customers healthy, but is there a particular restaurant or market in the Dominican Republic that you know of which consistently has problems with health and hygiene? Are there any food or drink items that travelers should exercise extreme caution with while visiting the Dominican Republic?

I recently stayed at one of the five RUI resorts in Punta Cana, Domincan Republic where guests had access to all of the properties. I picked up a norovirus or food poisoning along with two of my traveling companions, two of which were hospitalized. Our trip was miserable. I cannot pinpoint exactly what we ate that triggered the sickness as we were eating at the restaurants that required reservations, the daily buffets and the restaurants near the beach. I know one thing for sure - I will never go back!

We fell I'll on Tuesday morning very early within minutes of one another, & I am still I'll (now back home.) vomiting, diahrea, stomach and body pain, headache, & chills. I have it all. Please don't ever go to this resort, matter of fact don't ever go to the Dominican republic. It was awful

My spouse and I were in Punta Cana at the Natura Park resort. We were fine until the 2nd last day on the trip. My spouse was violently ill and I had it not as bad as him, but it was still bad. Been home for a day now and still can't eat, look at food or talk about food without gagging. I believe we were both affected by something served at the buffet restaurant.

I just got back from an all inclusive (Majestic) in Punta Cana and both my girlfriend and I become ill on our 4th day, and both at the same time. We know it was from one of the restaurants we ate in the night before. I didn't have anything to eat for 5 days after becomming ill. So much for the "all inclusive". We both have been home for 7 days now and are still recovering. Although a beautiful resort, I will not be going back.

My boyfriend and I just got back from The Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana and we both fell ill while there. It is definitely from the food or water! I got sick the 3rd day and was extremely ill (didn't leave the room most of 2 days). I only ate fruit and drank 2 bottled waters a day for the rest of the vacation and was less ill. My boyfriend fell ill 3 days before we left. He couldn't keep water down yet sweated so severely at night that the bed was soaked! We are only one day home and still ill. Do not go to Punta Cana!

A girls weekend for 4-nights was uneventful due to me getting food poisoning our first day at Eco Natura Resort in Punta Cana. I believe it was iceberg lettuce at the buffet, not sure. Intestinal issues for 12 hrs non-stop, then woke up vomitting. I passed out 3 times total, concurrent w/ vomitting. My friend had intestinal issues a day later. We got home and doctor started us on Cipro. Go elsewhere, food prep is 3rd world here.

My husband and I just got back from the occidental resort in punta Cana with another couple. I got food poisoning from something at the all-inclusive buffet. The food is left out for long periods of time in the hot weather and it does not stay cold. One can also tell the food is reused in other dishes later that day or the next. I do not recommend this place. The others got milder symptoms of just diarrhea.

My family and I just returned from Club Med in Punta Cana where I spent the last day of my trip in the infirmary getting IVs and medications. After the "gourmet" lobster and beef wellington night I became violently ill, vomiting no less than 15 times. I have been home for 2 days and am still recovering!

Just got back from occidental in Punta Cana and had suffered severe food poisioing. I was vomiting, diarrhea and severe abdominal pain. It had lasted for a good couple days and pretty much ruined my entire trip! I will NEVER EVER go back, the food was horrible. I recommend no one to go here!

My wife and I met my brother and his wife at the Palma Real and I became ill on the 5th day with diarrhea, abdominal pain and headache. Now, a week later, I still have abdominal pain but the other symptoms have subsided. My wife and brother also had similar problems. I think it was from shellfish I had at the buffet, but not sure what made my wife and brother sick. I have been to other countries in the Caribbean several times, but have never had this problem.

My husband and I went to Puerto plata village in the Dominican. I was very cautious in watching what I ate and drank. For the most part we ate off the "all inclusive" buffet. Had drinks from the bar but only drank bottled water. Day 2 I became very ill with abd cramping and massive diarrhea. My husband became ill day 4 with vomiting and diarrhea. A couple we met there experienced the same illness. We are home now and my symptoms have not subsided, may actually be worse!! I have been to the caribbean many times and NEVER been sick!!!

My husband and I stayed at the RIU Palace in Punta Cana. On our last night we ate at the Japanese Rest. and although we both ate the same meal. My husband had to run to the bathroom 15 minutes after the meal. He has been experiencing abdominal cramping, diarrhea, chills, and intermittent headaches. I am perfectly fine. 24 hours later and he is still sick so we will probably see a doctor tomorrow and start antibiotics just to be safe. Hopefully, it is just a case of food poisoning, and will run its course and resolve. He does not recall drinking the water but maybe the ice cubes were not made with bottled water. This was my first time in DR since 2000. We have both traveled to various vacation spots in Mexico for the last 4-5 years years, and we always eat both on and off the resort and neither one of us have ever been sick. I think that we will stick to Mexico the next time we need a beach/resort all inclusive get away.

My wife and I stayed for one week in La Romana at the Dreams Resort. By the third day I started feeling ill, and by the fifth day I was miserable. I'm not sure what specifically I ate, but all of the food was questionable. My symptoms started with a severe headache that lasted for three days straight with dizziness when moving. As this illness progressed I started having G.I. symptoms as follows: diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, and weakness. It has now been two days since I have been able to eat anything. I only have been able to take ice chips but not much, due to the increased pain that it causes. DO NOT GO TO THE DREAMS RESORT IN LA ROMANA!

Ilene, believe it or not the exact thing happened to us! My wife and I stayed at the RIU Palace Punta Cana resort in May 2012. Just like you, on our last night, we ate at the Japanese restaurant. About 4 hours after our dinner, while I was sleeping, I started feeling nauseated and got up and started vomiting. After the first episode of vomiting, I thought that was it. Man I was wrong! I vomited every 2 hours that night, until 6 am at which time I could not take it anymore and we walked to the only doctor's office in the neighboring resort. I was right away rushed to the hospital (we paid a taxi) as I was getting extremely dehydrated. I was given antibiotics through IV and the doctors kept me in the hospital overnight. We spent about 26 hours in the hospital and then had to leave to catch our plane. Had we not gone to see a doctor, god knows what would have happened to me. By the way, my wife also got a stomach flu although her case was lesser serious than mine. We ended up paying near $1500 for the hospitalization. This was definitely not we expected of DR and less so of the resort given it's 5 * name.

My wife, dad and stepmom stayed at the Excellence resort on the tip of the DR. My stepmom was very sick the next morning after the first night of eating and drinking. My wife came back with sand mite bites all over her to where she had to go to the dermatologist. I have had diarrhea and a stomach thing since returning. The one excursion we did while there was a nightmare. I will stick to the Bahamas, never had to deal with any of these issues. Like one person commented on here, very 3rd world food prep.

We stayed at the Paradisus Palma Real in the DR for our honeymoon. on the 5th day (our last evening there) my husband and I both felt sick. He used the restroom and was feeling better by the time he went to bed but I was up all night with severe stomach pains, chills then sweats and nausea. I spent most of the evening and the trip home (from airport to airport) in the bathrooms. It has been a week and I stil have stomach pain and can't keep much in me. We had breakfast at Palazzo (days 4 &5), lunch at Gabi Beach and dinner at Passions on day 4. These were the most exclusive restaurants at Palma Real. I am thinking it may have been the dairy but I don't know for sure.

I too became violently ill ( vomiting, diarrhea) after only a day at the Hard Rock Hotel in Punta Cana. i had the doctor come to my room and she gave me 3 shots and antibiotics the next day. She wanted me to go to the hospital since my vomiting would not stop. I was also dehydrated and she wanted to give me iv meds. My husband and I had exactly the same food and drink (only bottled water for teeth brushing, etc). Except for the fact that I have cream and sugar in my coffee and he takes his black– I think it was the warmed cream they gave me for my coffee. Someone we talked to here said it was probably the milk. This is the second time I have gotten sick in the DR and I will Never return. It is safer at home in the good old USA.

I agree Glenda. I have been to Punta Canta 2x now.The first time I was with my husband and another couple.WE stayed at Iberostar. We all had intestinal problems. Many people at the hotel also complained of diarrhea and intestinal issues. we thought we would try one more time. We just returned from a weeks trip in Feb of 2013 staying at Melia Caribe. We complied with the directions given to us of only using bottled water, and using no tap water etc. We were careful and avoided the sugary alcohol beverages. The same thing happened the end of the trip to both my husband and I. I was so ill on the return flight I almost fainted and had violent cramps.Never again~Punta Canta. Both of us are in our late 50's with no health issues. I have not been sick since the last time I was there.

I stayed at the Majestic Colonial 3/26 - 4/1. Became very ill with diarrhea Easter through today and almost missed my flight on 4/1. Believe problem was salad at the lunch buffet. Ate first meal today- 4/3: one cold turkey sandwich over 6 hours. Went to onsight medical clinic at resort before leaving for the airport in Punta Cana with low blood pressure and extreme weakness and dehydration. Dr was terrific- gave special drops to stop the runs and meds to help the stomach ph. I was the only one to get sick this way but it was hell and I am still not 100%. Stay away from raw fruits and vegs in Punta Cana.

While at a DR 5 star 3 of us got mild cramps and constant diahrea for 6 days. Only drank bottled water and ate on resort. From the noise in the bathrooms a lot of others were in the same boat. I was told by a fellow Canadian who lives there that it was most likely the seafood which we had ate on our 1st night. The food at the buffets is lukewarm and who knows how long it sits. Get some Cipro through your doctor before going there. Avoid buffet seafood and any food that does not look fresh and not steaming hot. Pepto and Imodium won't cure it but will allow you to function. Try to stick with fresh fruits and salads and fresh prepared meat for your stay. You have been advised.

While at a DR 5 star 3/6-3/26. Princess Bavaro. Became very ill after first week. Managed it with immodium. Drank only bottled water, followed all rules with brushing teeth and all. Had a few beers, ate at buffet, watched what I ate. Been home for over 3 weeks now and still have it. My partner got nothing. Only thing I ate that he didn't was some blue cheese. Have been avoiding starting antibiotics…But looks like I may have to.

Just returned form a visit to the DR June 2013. Stayed at the Excellence. Eight of us went over to the adults only all inclusive resort. About day 5 I came down with a super bad case of diarrhea, nasty gas, and major stomach pains. I have been back a week and I am still hitting the restroom 4-8 times a day. Everything I eat just goes right through me. In speaking with all the people we went with, all of us have had various episodes of the runs either there in Punta Cana or since our return home. I seem to have the biggest issue. If my body can't heal itself I will have to head to the doctor for a big dose of antibiotics as well. Will not ever be going back! Cruising is way better than the resort.

My family vacationed at Bavaro - - Palace Deluxe (supposed to be a 5-star) - in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and our intention was to stay 8 nights. By day 3 we were all sick with diarrhea and the two children got strep throat after being at the Kids' Club next to the Hard Rock there. So we won't be visiting there again. No refund on the three days missed when we went home ill.

Stayed at the bavaro princess for 5days. On the 4th night I became very Ill with diarrhea and dizziness. I can't pinpoint what I ate that got me sick but after I ate at the lunch buffet restaurant that looks over the ocean 30 min later I started feeling dizzy and fatigue. I drank a lot of bottled water and stayed hydrated throughout entire vacation. My husband and I were so bummed out because it was beautiful scenery but it wasn't worth how sick I was. I remained sick for over a week had to go to the doctor when I got home and they ran tests to find I had a bacterial infection and went to the hospital for 3days hooked up to iv pumping antibiotics in my system. Very scary. We won't be going back.

We just returned from a wedding at the Dreams Punta Cana resort. Although the resort is called Dreams Punta Cana, the resort itself is one hour north of Punta Cana. Of the 31 people who attended the wedding, 27 people became sick. A few people had diarrheal, but also some came down with diarrhea, flu like fever and vomiting. We were trying to narrow down what it was we ate or drank, but it was all so varied.

My wife and have had intestinal issues (diarrhea/aches/chills) for about 5 days since returning from Puerto Plata, DR. We stayed at Blue Bay Resorts and ate from the buffet and the Asian Restaurant at the resort. We're unable to pinpoint the food that caused it, as we ate a variety of foods while there. We drank only bottled water while at the resort and had minimal amounts of alcohol. We've had a number of friends that recently returned from different areas of DR with similar illnesses. The staff at Blue Bay were super friendly and I don't want to throw anyone under the bus, but all should have fair warning when visiting the DR that food borne illnesses are common there and no joke.

I just got back from Pureta Plata, DR and I am convinced that my diarrhea and griping stomach came from the fact that I found out they do not pasteurize there dairy products. The cheese, milk etc is made straight from the cows milk sack to your table! and the ice is probable not filtered. Plus they have not been taught proper hygiene for food preparation or should I say a more western approach to food preparations and hand washing. . Keep in mind those of us from bigger countries have a much higher standard for food prep. I found that if you eat the chicken cooked well and turkey and no dairy at all, you will not suffer as bad. Drink only bottled water, brush your teeth with bottled water and drink only bottled liqueurs and (non local beer) you might not suffer as bad. Oh and bring Diarrhea meds and constipation meds the island is so beautiful and if I go back I now know what to do. Oh also, they do not refrigerate there eggs so ask if they can only give you refrigerated egg products or ask for boxed non egg products. I hope this helps. The place is so lovely and I hope that some westerners can help to see that so many people are getting sick and they must make some changes at the big resorts.

My wife and I stayed at the Grand Palladium Palace in Punta Cana. 3 days after we arrived, we both got really bad food poisoning and had to stay in our room for the rest of our 7 day trip eating crackers and drinking bottled water. We could barely get out of bed to get to the washroom without "accidents". By the end, we both lost weight (about 7-8lb each).

My family and I just returned from a 10 day trip to the five star resort of Melia. I will say, while it is beautiful there, I will not be recommending this trip to anyone. I was sick with diarrhea for half of the trip (and like the person says in the above statement, I could barely make it to the bathroom without fear of having an accident), and my children both had stomach aches which ended up being so bad that we stayed in our room for an entire day (my son was worse than the rest of us, he was vomiting all night and all morning), but both had vomiting and diarrhea. My husband also ended up getting sick. We made the most of what we could, but all in all we were all so sick that it really took its toll. We had prescription meds with us which helped to some extent but we were all basically miserable on and off through our stay. Also, I spoke with a number of other people that were staying there and they all had the same problems. When I called the doctor about what was going on(thinking it was important for her to know the number of people that were sick) she blew me off and denied that there could ever be such a problem at their resort. I don't know if it was the food or the drinks, either way…we were all sick from food poising. We went to Mexico a few years back and had no problems at all…but here, horribly ill and will not return. We've been home for 3 days now, my son and husband are still not feeling well.

Just got back last week from VIC Arena in Punta Cana. Both my sister and I got sick the 2nd day of our trip. We both ate buffet food. We new not to touch the vegetables and anything that would be cleaned in tap water, however, we both got sick anyways. We both lost about 5 pounds each, and will never again return to the DR. Im still not able to eat very much, and when I do eat I get pain in my stomach. I have not visited a doctor yet but if the diarreah continues I will. Worst vacation ever. I suggest you stay away if you don't want to get sick, and overwealmed by the locals wanting your money for everything. I heard a lot of bad reviews but wanted to keep an open mind. Well now I know the truth and won't go back ever again. We are from Canada.

I came back from DR about 2 weeks ago I stayed in a hotel in Bocachica with couple of friends. I stayed there for 10 days. I was having a blast until the 7th day, at night, I started to feel weird, weak, heavy fever I was so hot I turn the ac on and after 5 minutes I started feeling cold chills so had to turn it back off and so on and on. I had severe intestinal cramps and I always felt like going to the bathroom but when I sat on the bowl only little yellow goowy stuff came out and felt constipated. My intenstines felt they were going to explode.I felt like this for the rest of my trip I didn't eat nothing for 2 days only drank water. I stayed in my room and at one point I taught I wasn't going to make it back home alive. It was a nightmare. One thing I can say is I wasn't really careful . I ate almost everyday seafood that those vendors sell walking around the beach. I brush my teeth with the tap water. I don't know if that's the cause but I can say I was having a good time before I got sick and planning on returning but I will be very careful next time. When I got home the fever went down I started using laxatives and started eating normal again. I lost 10 pounds when I returned. I decided to go to the hospital to make sure I was ok. They did a couple of tests like urine sample, blood tests and gave me little plastic containers to bring home. I had to bring them stool samples. A week and a half passed and I received a call from the doctor today and told me they found a bacterial infection in my stool. He told me it was due to something I ate or the water and that he seen this case very frequently in people who come from vacation. He asked me if I still had any symptoms left I told him no all the fever is gone, normal stool so he told me I don't need to take any antibiotics. Anyway I don't wish that on my worst enemy I really taught I was going to die in DR. I will be extra careful next time I really hope I don't get sick again over there because I really liked DR

My fiancé and I just returned home from the new Breathless Resort & Spa in Punta Cana. We followed all the CDC guidelines/advice for traveling to Dominican Republic and by the second morning after room service (scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes) we both had severe diarrhea. Every time we tried to eat a meal, we both would have to go to the bathroom many many times with extreme urgency. I stopped eating by day 3 and only had bottled water and bread. I didn't have issues until I got home and ate a meal again. My fiancé is still suffering from severe diarrhea and cramping. He has lost over 15 lbs over the week and I lost about 4 lbs. Both of us were very careful but he did eat from the buffet twice and ate some beef and "chivo" (goat). He didn't know it was goat meat until later. Many of the people who were there for the conference also got sick with diarrhea. It was the most miserable week (we only went outside for about an hour one of the days because we felt so horrible!). I had reservations about going on this trip and after the week from hell, we will never return!! My fiancé has been to several places in the Caribbean and Mexico and has never gotten sick. The food is awful and it sits out all day. I hope we recover soon from whatever is giving us the terrible stomach issues!!! Do not go to Punta Cana!

My husband and I stayed at lifestyle vacation club in Punta Cana and after 2 days I began vomiting which lasted for 3 hours non stop. Thought it was over only to be replaced with diarreah which lasted all night with such force and pain like I never had in my life. A doctor came to my room began an IV at my bedside and then drove us to the hospital. I was burning with fever and very dehydrated. I stayed 24 hrs in the hospital and was told after the tests were done that I had a tropical bacterial infection. I was given 3 meds to take with me but I didn't take them because my diarreah started when I got back to my hotel. The hospital bill was up to $7500. They wouldn't take my insurance and wanted to charge our credit card the full amt. we gave them $1000. Instead. First time I didn't buy trip ins. Also had to cut the vac short by 3 days and had to pay $470. To change flts. What a nightmare. Stay away from that country.

My husband and I just returned from Dreams La Romana and we both got sick, along with most of the people who we talked to at the resort. He thinks it was the potato soup at the Dominican restaurant, but I have no idea what made me sick. I don't eat seafood and I was very careful with the water. He had diarrhea and I had diarrhea and vomiting. It was awful. I think that it is something in the food prep or perhaps the pasteurization of the milk products. I loved the scenery and the people, but I am not sure if I will ever return to the DR. We have been to Mexico 6 or 7 times and have never had a problem. I wish that I had checked out this forum before I booked my trip…

I have returned from DR and have severe diaherra and horrid cramps! If your going to DR be careful what you eat and dont drink the water only bottled. Dream la romana is a lovely hotel they gave anti bacterial spray to each person at the buffet before entry so measures are being put in place to keep hygeine in check.
Advising people not to go to DR is ridiculous! Anyone can get bugs anywhere in the world its not going to put me off visiting there again!

I have just returned from Sanctuary Cap Cana-Punta Cana..Visiting there for three nights. On last day (day three) I had mild diarrhea and terrible bouts and abdominal cramping, lethargy, fever and chills for four days following…An incredible resort which I really enjoyed. However, after much thought I would advise travelers en route to the Dominican to avoid ANYTHING with dairy (EX. pina colada, creamed spinach, scrambled eggs cooked with milk, cereal w/milk, coffee cream, flan -any dessert w/dairy, etc……I believe the creamed spinach did me in but cant confirm. The carribean is a beautiful vacation destination just be cautious of ingesting foods that need refrigeration on a 4 hour buffet table, tap water, and dairy. The Dominican is a beautiful slice of paradise. Do not be discouraged just be aware.

My family just got back from Club Med in Punta Cana. We all got horribly sick. Diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, urgency, nausea, malaise, malodorous horror. It was especially scary and awful because our 3 year old had 2 terrifying seizures as a result of his travelers diarrhea induced fever. DON'T GO. Worst vacation ever. It's amazing to think that we spend thousands of dollars to be stuck in a hotel room SICK in every way imaginable for a week. I wish I had read this earlier.

I'm at home sitting on the toilet and my stomach is burning like fire. My wife and I just returned from the riu palace in the d.r. I have never had anything like this and I would not recommend that you eat there. The facility was nice and clean but the food was apparently not very clean. I did not drink the water. I also wish that I had read this.

I just came back from Dreams in La Romana. We loved the resort. My husband had some mild stomach ache but after 1 week of being back, I am still sick, unable to keep in anything I eat due to frequent BM. I am concerned I got a parasite or something like that. I am not sure I would go back as I also heard other people at the resort commenting on being sick. Too bad because we had a lovely vacation and resort / beach was beautiful.

Just got back from the DR yesterday. we stayed at Secrets Resort in Puta Cana. Day 3 of our trip I became very ill. severe diarrhea and sharp burning pains at the top of my stomach. I ended up going to medical which was 163.00 just to see the doctor. I ended up getting an IV and Cipro antibiotic with $463.00 medical bill. I did not drink the water and used the bottled water to brush my teeth. However, I did eat at the buffet and I think that was the cause. I did feel much better after the IV but ended up staying in my room for the rest of my trip which was my anniversary. I have never been so happy to be on US soil!

Just returned from Club Med in Punta Cana and have had diarrhea and cramping since Sunday, my last day there. Since it has now been four days and I have lost five pounds I plan to see a Dr today. The food was great there, but you just can't trust how it was handled. Many folks touching the food with varying levels of training so…I will not be returning to the DR anytime soon.

I'm staying at memories splash with 16 other people. All of the adults have had horrible intestinal issues. So far day 4 none of the kids are sick. My girlfriend and I have had severe body aches and fatigue. The only thing I can figure out is kids usually don't eat vegetables so stay away from salad especially.

Oh boy, we just got back from Punta Cana trip last Thurs, we stayed at Be Live Resort (which has not so great reviews to begin with) but, all 12 of us got sick at different points throughout the trip. Some had it worst (diarrhea, cramps, vomit, fever) while most of us had diarrhea - but for a week now! The fever & chills for the few people including my 4-yr old daughter was for a little over 24hrs but the diarrhea is lasting so far a week. Some people didn't start coming down with it more severely until returning home… it's too bad to hear SO many similar stories since it's such a beautiful place (although don't go to Be Live hotel!!!)

Went to Dominican Republic from 8/20- 8/27/14. Stayed at the Breathless Punta Cana resort. Got diarrhea , throwing up, & bad stomach cramps by the 4th day. So spent the last 3 days in my room, because I was afraid I wouldn't make it to the restroom in time for such volatile BM. I am not a big drinker, but I did have prob 2 frozen drinks a day. Ate at buffet the whole time. I don't know whether to go to doctor or keep riding it through. I'ts been 9 days now. Such a beautiful slice of paradise, gorgeous beaches & pretty nice people. I WON'T be going back though. I have never had a problem in Cancun,Mexico or Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, etc. Maybe just stay in the good old USA. Anyone else end up at Doctor? I'm just scared it could be cholera. :-(

My boyfriend and I also stayed at Gran Bahia Principe, Punta Cana from 8/30-9/6 and became ill with severe stomach cramps and diarrhea after the second day. I also had fever, aches and chills which lasted about 24 hours. The cramps have mostly subsided but we still both have diarrhea. We ate at all the buffets as well as restaurants so we can't pinpoint exactly what caused it, most likely the improper food handling and preparation as others have stated. After reading all of the above complaints, I think we will visit a doctor also.

My husband and I were booked to travel to Majestic Punta Cana. After reading so many terrible reviews about travelers becoming violently ill we decided to go to Jamaica. I spoke to several people at resort that have previously travelled to DR and everyone that had visited got sick at some point. I would strongly advise everyone to really consider travel to DR!! Who wants to spend a vacation sick and possibly in the hospital? Our travel agent even said "yeah most people get sick there due to extremely poor water sanitation." I saw a previous post joking about cholera but according to the CDC website there is currently a problem there. Yikes!!

Stayed at Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana and was sick as a dog. My husband woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain stomach issues and painful diarrhea. My bile was uncontrollable had to stay near a toilet at all times. Spent our anniversary there 10/18-10/26 I really didn't know what it was thinking it was the alcohol. I've been home a week and finally towards the last of this week I am no longer having the issue and my husband is getting better too. Didn't know the DR had bacterial issues with food and water. I just assumed it would be fine since they cater to only tourist. We always used bottled water but not sure about the ice. I loved the DR but becoming more aware of their food and water issues.

December 1st, 2014

Just came back from the Majestic at Punta Cana. 2 families went for a wedding, over half of both families became ill. I became ill on the second day, severe stomach cramps, diarrhea - and now back home at day 7 I'm still having cramps, but not as bad. Most were ill for the good part of 3 days, some had less severe illness. People question whether or not we all had the flu. Really? ALL of us? We all flew from different parts of the U.S. and Canada, had very little interaction other than sitting outside at a table together. On the other hand, we were instructed by hotel staff to use bottled water to brush our teeth and keep our mouths closed while in the shower. (By the way, we were all very careful to follow these instructions prior to becoming sick). Obviously, something is wrong here, either the water or the food. Some of those answering posts about food poisoning in Punta Cana suggest that the real cause of these issues is drinking too much, or staying in the sun too long. Baloney. My kids were both sick, neither had the opportunity to stay in the sun too long as they slept late (teenagers) and spent the rest of the day mostly inside. Obviously, neither was on a drinking binge! In fact, none of the people that got sick were on the beach/drinking since we had planned family events instead. I know many people who go to the DR are fine and do not become ill. I get that. However, if you are not in the 50% half that stays well, you will regret going. It is not worth the 3 miserable days I spent out of my life when I could go to another island that is just as beautiful and be fine. And here I am back home STILL dealing with gastro. issues. I'll never go back. Period.

I am at the Majestic Colonial now and after the first day my husband and I were here we got sick. Diarrhea, cramps, gas. Hit us so fast after we ate at the beach buffet. We are scared to eat or drink anything for fear of it getting worse. So much for all inclusive. We hardly got to drink Because we are too nervous to bc of the ice. Today we stuck to bottled water and ate light. After dinner at the seafood restaurant and already both of us back in the bathroom. Ugh. We have 2 days left and it's really putting a damper on things. Shame because it's such a nice place. We can't be the only ones! Absolutely beautiful here but won't return to DR bc of this. We have been to Mexico twice, Antigua, Bahamas, Puerto Rico and a Carribbean cruise and were fine.

We stayed at the royalton, sister hotel to memories splash in August 2014. 12 out of 14 of us were ill. One hospitalised for three days after vomiting blood. The food was to blame I am sure and the water served in jugs which we were told was bottled. Never again. It was supposed to be a holiday of a lifetime. Didn't bother writing to TUI. Stomach still upset day I after got home. Also have a rash which not sure what from Not to mention I was scared for my life half the trip and too worried about getting sick to really enjoy mysrelf. My husband and I stayed at the Majestic Elegance with another couple from February 20 till the 26th. The second day shortly after we had lunch at the beach seafood restaurant I got suddenly ill with painful stomach cramps and explosive diarrhea and chills. I felt like I was going to throw up and pass out several times but did not. After a couple of hours it subsided and I would only eat binding foods after that. I didn't go again until the morning we were leaving and now that we are home I am still having painful gas and loose stools and no energy . Our friends are now having the same issue now that they are home. I do take probiotics regularly and I had them with me on the trip. I will not go back it seemed that most people we spoke with had some type of food issue. This was our third time at the DR . In the past we stayed at other resorts and did not have this issue.

This resort was fabulous and we had the time of our lives but the food prep and care must be lacking, maybe sometimes beyond their control. I'm getting Cipro as mine keeps lingering. Beautiful resort but both of us are sick, husband has temp of 102, chills, the runs, stomach pain and hasn't eaten for 36 plus hours. I have had runs for last 4 days. Stayed at Dreams last time, got sick there also. Beautiful place, tho, with wonderful people. Just be prepared. I knew to be careful and still got sick after just one meal at the buffet. :-( Might also have been the icy drink they gave us at check-in. Avoided salad, and chose only dishes with visible steam coming off the plate. So who knows. Barely made it to the ocean-side restroom, now afraid to leave our room! Just back from the Occidental Punta Cana. Went with husband, mother in law and 10 year old daughter. All used bottled water for everything, all of us got ill. Took immodium which stopped it for a couple of days but returned with a vengeance and had to take again just to fly home. Would never go again, the food hygiene just isn't there and with so many people getting ill and then touching the utensils etc at the buffet it just spreads. We used a ton of hand sanitizer, too. I took a probiotic everyday and started taking Immmodium once I arrived at the hotel. My husband and I both started feeling a little sick on our next to last day at resort. By the time we were on our flight, we were both incredibly nauseated. My husband had a cheeseburger at the airport prior to the flight, and he thinks this intensified his sickness, and I ate a hot dog. We thought we were safe to eat at airport, and we were so hungry after eating so little at our resort. Our 2 daughters ate nothing at the airport and have not been sick at all. We have been home 4 days, and we both are still sick with nausea, cramps, tons of bathroom visits, can't keep anything on our stomachs, and overall fatigue. My husband has been running a fever, too. Sadly, I must report a similar experience. Just left the Reserve at Paradisus, an absolutely beautiful resort where I got violently ill from the food. About 5 hours after consuming a delicious tasting lunch on day 2 of our visit, I had ongoing vomiting, explosive and bloody poop, fever an chills. I can't remember ever being so sick. I refused to go to the doctor and just existed on tonic water and soda crackers for the remainder of the trip. My advice is to take it slow. The food looks gorgeous, but you should ease into it. Avoid things with milk/cream if possible. What a total downer to my girls trip — I still don't feel right, days later!

We just returned from a 6 day visit to Now Larimar. On the first night I became violently ill diarrhea and vomiting. I had severe nausea and sweats and body aches. I took imodium, pepto and rolaids to control my stomach which settled it except for some of diarrhea. The last night I became violently ill again, puking my brains out. Both nights I vomited we had eaten at the buffet. I ate very, very sparingly throughout the week because of the nausea. I am home 3 days now and still struggling and feeling week. We stayed preferred and the service was incredible. I only drank bottled water and canned beer when I could stomach it. My husband and I travel to Mexico 2-3 times a year and I have NEVER been ill. It was a beautiful trip and wonderful resort but the sickness was terrible.

It is a shame to have to include such a beautiful resort in this category but here goes. My wife and I have been here at Bahia Principe Cayo Levatando in Samana since May 2nd on our honeymoon. In the last couple days we have experienced mild stomach cramps and I have been to the washroom maybe 20 times this week, but it seemed to subside. Just today we have had to abandon our zip line excursion due to her being crippled over in pain from intense stomach cramps. Luckily there has been no vomiting, but she has been constipated for a week. Excellent resort and staff, but exercise caution with their food and water. It is a 5 star resort, but I guess it all depends on how the food is prepared and handled.

Been in DR for 8 days with no problem. Ate at Pate Palo (one of the nicest restaurants in Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial) and have been sick with diarrhea and griping stomach pains ever since. Ate pate which was absolutely delicious as was the rest of the meal. Also had ice cream from restaurant next door. Feel like it was the ice cream that did it however. Was feeling completely fine until I ate it. I had the majority of the two scoops while my husband had a few bites. He had mild stomach problems soon after while mine have been much worse. Stay away from
Dairy while here. Wish we had never gone to santo Domingo to be quite honest. Traveled all throughout DR and ate everything including street food without incident. Santo Domingo was very disappointing. People trying to take advantage of us everywhere and someone stole the side mirrors from EVERY car parked on the block of our hotel. WHAT THE HELL?!?! Will never return to santo Domingo, but will probably come back to the DR.

Later that evening chills, sweats and fever took over which left us not knowing if I'd be able to tavel home the next morning. All these symptoms continued for 3 more days and after 6 days I am just starting to feel better. My wife also had milder symptoms, as well as half of the group of 40 that traveled with us. I also had stomach issues mine became worse the last day and continued until I got home 3 days later we both still have upset stomachs and minor headaches. We told the staff about it they laughed it off. I also kept in contact with another family that was there at the same exact time and they have been sick since the trip. This is recent travel in fact we just got back today!!! I have never been on a vacation were I was afraid to eat or drink water for 2 days. Some damn vacation!!! My wife and I went for a week to Punta Cana. Didn't get sick until the day we left and the last thing we ate was at Wendy's at the airport. The symptoms of abdominal pains, chills and consent vomiting started kicking in.

My husband and I just spent a week at the Paradisus Palma Real resort. I got food poisoning on the 3rd day and I still haven't been able to shake it. I'm also 5 months pregnant and very worried about my baby. When we called the front desk regarding all the issues we had at this resort, they really could care less. They never called me back and even told us to wait in our room for them to walk over with a manager. After an hour of waiting and 2 calls back to the front desk assuring us a manager was coming, they never showed up. They also never called back or accommodated us for anything. Worst resort, worst island, worst people. So rude, so unaccommodating, and so unfriendly…needless to say we will NEVER come back. There are plenty of beautiful, clean resorts and islands in the Caribbean that are worth visiting. Punta Cana/Dominican Republic is not one of them.

Was my third time in Punta Cana, DR. Never have I been as sick as I was during that one week from utter hell. I stayed at Paradisus Punta Cana and at around day 2 my stomach began to hurt, just a dull miserable ache that never went away for the entire trip, I don't know what I ate but it got so bad that I was moaning in agony by the pool side, I had all the symptoms of food poisoning, nausea, sweating, I vomited violently and felt like I had a really bad flu, chills, body aches, my arms and legs even began to tingle and go numb.. you name it I had it. Not everybody gets sick in Punta Cana but for those that do it's usually brutal. Dominican Republic is a third world country with next to zero food and sanitation standards. Never again DR, never again Carribbean or third world period. It's just not worth the risk, save your money and travel to North America or Europe where you know what you're eating has to pass standards.

Stayed at the Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana while our time there was wonderful my butthole is raw! I began having diarrhea and strong sharp stomach pains our second day there. Of a group of about 40 almost ALL of us had some sort of stomach pain, loose stool, or diarrhea. We have been home 2 days now and I am still waking to pains and diarrhea.

I agree with Mike above… Same issues as everyone else. Here are my trip details:
July 27-Aug 2
Memories Splash Resort Dominican Republic
Only I was sick out of our group of 5. Abdominal pain diarrhea since Saturday evening Aug 1 around 8:00pm and still going. Gas is awful and painful. I ate a lot of the fresh seafood chopped with veggies, and used the lines, and drank the coffee each morning, these are the things I had different from the other 4 in my group. Could it be they make their coffee with water from their faucets? Possibly… Had to be coffee or fresh seafood. I only drank bottled water. So to pin point would be a huge challenge. Fair warning tho… Take heed.

Stayed at Bahia Principe Ambar July 26-August 1st. Hubby was hit hard on day 3 and is still dealing with pain and diarrhea. I was hit on our last night despite best efforts to avoid food items that were certainly repeat performances…again and again. It's too bad the kitchen staff isn't committed to the same standards and cleanliness as the grounds staff. This was a one and done for us and based on previous comments, I will discourage others from going. The pain and suffering is just not worth it!

My 18 year old son just arrived home from Punta Cana. Spent most of his vacation at a Dominican hospital (if you want to call it that!). Had terrible food poisoning from eating two spareribs at the buffet! Violent vomitting, diareaha, high fever, numbness in his legs. His girlfriend called the front desk explaining how sick he was, they said my son would have to pay a "consultant" $130.00 to go to his room to check on him. It was 11PM. I had to wake up a neighbor who is a spanish teacher to speak to the consultant on my behalf. The consultant told her my son needed to get to the hospital and they would call a cab. My friend said they were not to put two eighteen year olds in a cab, they must call an ambulance. Got to hospital, still vomitting, after about an hour of ignoring him they hooked him up to an IV. They would not let him leave until they got $1,000.00 for the visit. He calls me crying saying they need $1,000.00. I gave the hospital my credit card information, but they denied it because they wanted my bank to call and verify that the money was in my account. An hour later he was released. He asked if they could call him a cab because they didn't know where they were, they said "no." Can't even get into what transpired outside of the hospital, but it was scary as hell for them. Arriving back at the resort his girlfriend told the front desk the hospital said they cannot go back to their room because it is contaminated. They said if you need another room it will cost $400.00. They didn't have it so they had to stay in the contaminated room.
At the airport he spent his entire time in the bathroom.
Before they were ready to board I told him to splash cold water on his face and stay strong and try not to sweat, because if they see him sweating, looking pale, and faint, they will pull him out of line because of the ebola virus scare.
Needless to say, Punta Canta is a third world island and I will tell everyone I know this horrible tale. Disgusting place!

My 19 year old daughter just returned from Be Live in Punta Cana. Violently ill on the third day. She had to get IV's because of dehydration from non-stop vomiting and explosive diarrhea, chill's, and fever. First trip away with her friends & they all got some type of food poisoning and they all ate at the buffet. The girls spent their vacation in their rooms and taking turns running into the bathroom. Such a disgrace. The girls worked hard to pay for their trips and to spend it a bathroom is appalling! For these resorts to stay in business & take people's hard earned money is reprehensible.
I don't know where to go from here. Everyone here can compare their horrible illnesses they got because of these resorts, but I don't know how to take this to the next level. I do know they should not be allowed to take our money and then just shrug when people complain about their sickness. It is probably so common for them to hear the same complaints day in and day out that they just ignore everyone as a "whiner" and continue on with their day and don't give anyone a second thought.
Has anyone complained to a higher authority. I checked to see if Homeland Security has an office there, but from what I read, there is no office.
I am disgusted with this place!

Just got back from Memories Splash in Punta Cana. Four of us were ill with diarrhea on the second day and continue to be ill. I am attributing the illness to their food from either their Selections buffet, seafood at Under the Sea restaurant, or coffee. We will not go back and have advised our relatives the same. I have never purchased so much Imodium in our entire lives. Glad to be home. God bless the USA!

My husband and I just got back from Iberostar Punta Cana. We got there on the 2nd and on the 4th day my husband started to have bad stomach cramps followed by diarrhea. The second night he had cold sweat and major pains. I got sick the following day. The food was not amazing and I stayed away from the most meats. I basically ate pasta everyday because it was prepared in front of me but I still got sick. We complained at the front desk and they said no one else was sick but I don't believe that. The buffet always had flies and it was just gross. Last night I went to look for crackers for my dinner and walked past the rice and it smelt awful. I've been to the iberostar in Jamaica and we had no problems so I didn't think we would have issues here. We will not be going back there again that's for sure.

My family and I stayed at the Barcelo Bavaro resort and the trip was great, all except the food. My entire family (and friends of ours that went as well) all had diarrhea the entire trip. The last day and when we got home the symptoms continued to get worse. Some of us were still having terrible diarrhea, vomitting, abdominal cramping, fevers, and chills. We went to the doctor to have stool samples tested and it turns out we have parasites. The resort is unsafe for its customers. DO NOT go there and expect not to get sick from the food. Random strangers we talked to were sick as well while there. Besides that the resort was beautiful.. but i would never go there for 6 days to be sick for 12… not worth it the nights not able to sleep because you are in so much pain.

Our fourth night after having dinner at Gabby Beach Restaurant we both became Violently ill. Throwing up, diarrhea, fever, body aches. Flying home the next day was hard. We’re been home now for three days and are slowing beginning to recover. Extremely tired, still stabbing stomach pain. This place should be shut down before they kill someone. We are planning to see doctor this afternoon, we're afraid of parasites. WARNING… Do not stay at Paradisus Punta Cana.

At wednesday night, our fifth day my husband started with diarrhea and it did not stop yet, he have been miserable since then. I have two day myself with uncomfortable feeling in my stomach every time I drink something at the pool bar, thank Good I did not have diarrhea and thank Good my son is ok. We are very disappoint with the resort food wise, we though it was different and plus obviously my husband got food poison. What thing we know for sure we never come back to Dominican Republic, we suppose to enjoy our vacation, with out worried what we drink or eat, if we knew this, we will never pick up to travel here. Until I got ill it was lovely, BUT I will NEVER return.
I can't not even swollow water and just sit and cry.
Nobody should go through this.

I'd had only bottled water and was careful what I ate. But something got me. I Also have loads of bites even though I had strong repellent.

Have been to Mexico and Cuba and been fine.

I have been home from Meli Caribe for a little over a week, I am just now finally starting to be myself again. 2nd day in out of 7 I came down with bad stomach cramps, dirreah, vomiting, chills and very weak. The resort sent me to the on site doctor or gave me a shot for the cramping then said I needed to go to the hospital. They sent myself and my wife by cab, about 30 minutes later I had an IV in me, and then the doctor said I had to stay. I opted to go back to the resort with meds to help me because I do not speak Spanish and they did not speak English. For the remainder of trip I spent it in the bathroom even with the meds. When I got home I saw my doctor and he said it was a parasite. I spent 2500 for the trip, add in 1200 for medical help, this does not seem fair to me. I am talking with lawyers now to try and get something back.

Went to Catalonia Bavaro - Punta Cana for the honeymoon with my new bride Sept 21-27th, 2015. After 2 days, we both started to get runny stool and diarrhea. It had to be from the food at the all inclusive resort. Neither of us felt great, but it was manageable. The last night we were there, my wife got it so bad, she had to rush back to the room to go. She was miserable. I, having been back for nearly 2 weeks now, have not had but 1 single solid BM. It was a lovely vacation and we had a lot of fun. But based on the way my gut feels still now, I will never be going back.

Went to Hard Rock Resort Punta Cana October 20-27. Four days into our trip and husband got sick with severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and a general vague feeling. We are now home and is still dealing with the same issue every time he eats something. Symptoms going on day 5. I have had a lighter version of the same symptoms. Miserable way to end a beautiful vacation. Sounds like this is a typical story for people going to the D.R. This is our third time to Punta Cana, but the first time having this issue. My wife and I, along with another couple stayed at Vista Sol Poopa Caca from 10/21 - 10/26. My wife started with an explosive BM on the evening of our first night. I started my porcelain encounters on the second day. None of us had any vomiting, but all four of us had stomach cramps, sewer gas, and diarrhea to some extent. In fact, nearly a week after our return to civilization, none of us are back to normal yet. Like several others have posted, we also went through security at the airport and saw what we thought was divine intervention… WENDY'S. That may have been the DR's final and most evil of pranks. It made for a nearly impossible flight home. The US State Dept should impose travel restrictions to the DR until they can demonstrate basic food service hygiene. It's absolutely ridiculous that a week after arriving home, I'm still squirting.

Hi, We stayed at the lifestyles resort in Puerto Plata from 10/22 to 10/31. on approximately 10/29 I had lethargy that confined me to bed for the day and frequent watery, uncontrollable stools. After that the lethargy mostly decreased, and with the help of immodium was able to continue my vacation. My wife was not affected. The resort was all inclusive. The only things I ate different from her there was the corn pudding, and spicy soup. and eggs at breakfast. Freshmade omelets with customer pick out ingredients. We also ate at a roadside stand, where I had the fresh fried plantains. My best guess is the pudding, since temperature should have rendered the rest safe. It is almost a week later and I still have loose stools.cI have not been treated with an antibiotic yet. But if it reaches 7 days I'll go see my doc.

Stayed at Bahia Principe Ambar Oct.25-Nov.1. On honeymoon. Food was awful. On day 4 I woke up violently ill. Vomiting and explosive diarrhea with twisting abdominal pain. I laid in bed 2 days lifeless. Husband went to resorts "clinic" doctor who refused to come to the room. So he carried me back to "clinic" a woman took my Blood pressure ..temp..and gave me an injection of "pain and nausea meds". Told me come back next day to check in. Went back was no better. She told me I needed to go to hospital for IV fluids..stool cultures and blood work. ..but that my bill for the "clinic" was already over $500 and I would need $2500 to $5000 upfront to be treated at hospital. Needless to say we were floored! We purchased insurance for trip for medical and meant nothing to her ! She said no you get reimbursed! I stayed in a fetal position in bed till we left 3 days later. Felt I was going to die! We refused to pay the resort "clinic " $500. While trying to board bus to airport the "doctor" came running stopped us n embarrassed us by screaming we needed to pay! We kept refusing so she threatened calling Police! Resort manager came over said we need to pay. We explained it all and said we should have told resort and they would have paid..so we said we did tell someone ! The "clinic " in the resort! And our DR Apple Rep ! He said it was too late…so we paid her $100 cash and just left so we wouldn't miss our bus to airport. I have never felt like a criminal but it was horrible! I went to Hospital as soon as I was home off the plane. Received IV fluids pain meds and anti nausea meds. Sent me home on 3 more meds. I'm still not feeling well and can't work! I will never travel out of my country again! We treat animals better in our country than they treated me! Thank god I never went to their "hospital" !! All we are is money to them. Will never go back!

After 1.5 days my pal and I fell ill with diarrhea, cramps, fatigue and headache. We were able to cope because of Pepto Bismol ( the only medication available at the resort ) but only barely. After returning home our symptoms persisted. Went to the doctor and started on flagyl. After 2 days of meds my symptoms have significantly diminished and my strength has returned. Must continue meds for another 3 days. Front Desk of resort admitted to us that "several" people had complained about similar problems.

Hello my fellow sick travelers….. Yes my husband and I got sick three days into our trip 11/26/15- 12/2/15 at "The Level" Melia Tropical. They did nothing for us. Same as everyone else: Horrible wrenching cramps across the belly, diarrhea, weakness. We thought it was the bottled water "Alaska" was the name on it. BUT with reading all of this I believe it's the lack of rules and sanitation for cooking the food or it was our room (the bathroom had this real weird odor). They wanted me to go to their Dr. but I said no so I talked with him on the phone. (thank god I listened to my gut and said oh no I could see them charging an arm and a leg). I agree with everyone that they have there money and they know they don't have to give us refunds so they just don't care. I will never go back to the Dominican again. It was the worst vacation ever. It took 16 days for my husband to finally feel better. I made the mistake after feeling better going out to eat at a restaurant and the symptoms started again (i think because my immune system was so low). Do yourself a favor and run away from the DR. You get what you pay for and I would rather have spent an extra 1000 dollars to have a better vacation where I did not get sick.

We all drank Dukoral before we left (followed instructions) and hubby and I had cipro to take, but doc said kids can't take it. We're both well now, but my little guy is really sick. Just returned from the BE Live in Punta Cana on Jan. 1st. Got sick on Dec. 27th and have been violently ill even since returning home. You can tell by the fact that that butter is in bowls , without ice on the buffett table all day, and they probably have untrained works preparing the food and not washing it properly. Hot food on the buffet was never hot and cold food was not kept cold. Spoke with many people I met at the hotel and almost everyone had gastric issues which were very severe. This hotel should not be allowed to be open and all the hotels should be inspected. From other comments on this website I will never visit the DR again. Jus not worth risking my health. Don't go there, apparently even 5 star hotels don't know how to prepare food.

Came back from paradisus. Beautiful resort-absolutely loved the beach and the night life. However, my mom and I got really sick. 2nd day I had horrible fever, sinus infection, diarrhea, and dehydration. I had no appetite for about 3 days. It's been a week and I still get diarrhea every day and I have extreme hunger. Might need to see a doctor. I ate a lot of fruit and coffe with milk and the majority of my meals were a lot of the buffet stuff sitting out that could be contaminated by flies. My mom still has extreme stomach pains, constipation, and no appetite, still, a week later. She probably has it worse than me. Both of us ate same foods, and one day we both accidentally used the sink water to brush our teeth.

On my fourth day at the Grand Palladium Bavaro, I acquired food poisoning, most likely from the Italian restaurant because it was after my main course that the violent stomach pains and diarrhea started. Two days later and my stools are green from bile and lack of absorption, and I still have this awful stomach bug. Plus, I developed an itchy rash on my chest and had a severe sinus reaction to the environment. It was a horrible trip because I was sick with three illnesses from that place. I will NEVER go to Punta Cana again.

We just returned with our whole family including 5 grandkids from Now Larimar. Beautiful resort! However, after the first & second days we started getting sick.
Diarrhea, vomiting, chills, stomach cramps…etc. it's hard to enjoy a vacation in the bathroom! I felt terrible for taking our children & grandchildren there. We will never go back! And we've been home for 3 days & some of us are still sick!

My husband and I just came home Saturday, January 16th 2016 from the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Hotel in Punta Cana. We were both fine until the airplane ride home I started with stomach pains and then that night I hade severe diarrhea and more cramping. My husband started with the diarrhea early Sunday morning and is still suffering with fever, diarrhea and cramping and it is now Monday night. I do not think it was the food at the resort but figure it is from the Wendy's in the Punta Cana airport. I had a half a burger and he the chicken sandwich. Horrible way to end a beautiful week!

Heather
my husband and I went to the Rui Bachata Dec 2015 and were so sick after 2 days that we both were on intravenous, and it took 2 weeks to recover after we got home. We were told by the dr on site it was the food. We were put on antibiotics, plus given other meds to try to reduce major stomach cramps etc

We just returned from Paradisus Punta Cana (Jan 21-28 2016) I became violently ill on day 5. Lasted about 10 hours. Since returning home whatever it was has been passed to every family member in my house.

We stayed at the majestic! Beautiful beach but horrible diarreha! So sick and still having stomach pains since being home. Worst digestive pain in my life! My husband and our friends also sick! I literally think the sanitation has to be horrible. I did not eat the last 3days there. I will never travel there again.

Returned home from Dreams Punta Cana Feb 4. Very bad repeated vomiting and diarrhea about 8 hours after eating at buffet. Like others, will never go back to the Dominican. Still feeling crummy and can't eat normally yet (5 days later). Why pay money to go to resorts to get sick? There are so many other places to visit! Never again

Spent a nice vacation in DR but got food poisoning at the airport Wendy's on the way back home. Don't eat at the airport restaurants… There isn't anything worse than food poisoning on a plane!

Just got back from Casa de Campo, LaRomana. Got sick on day 3 with cramps, diarrhea. I suspect one of the restaurants at the marina where I had my one and only salad. Still sick 4 days later. Will start antibiotics and hope for the best. There was a group of 80 people and others in our group were likewise sickened. There is a problem in that country and not even the most expensive resorts can avoid it.

Visited "Breathless" in Punta Cana, and was fine until the last day there (day 6). Returned home and still–one month later–have diarrhea. Was absolutely fine before visiting DR. Did not eat any seafood, as I'm allergic to it. Ate mostly vegetarian diet while there–fruits, salads, bread, cheese, yogurt. I did notice that the cheese looked like it may have been sitting out too long. Drank mostly table wine, gin-based drinks, and lots of bottled water. Don't know what is wrong with me, but I'm sick of feeling horrible! A total disaster.

My husband got very sick after eating in the Italian restaurant at the Serenis Cocotal Casino and Aquagames in Jan 2016. We have been going to to the Caribbean since 2000 and he said this the last time we are going. He also had food poison in Cuba 10 years ago.

As I sit here reading these it brings back some horrible memories of a nightmare holiday I had with my husband in 2008. We stayed at the Baha Principe in Punta Cana where we both got severe food poisoning. We were both admitted to the hospital in Punta Cana and they were talking at one point of my husband not surviving. Five glorious days in the hospital. I remember the flight attendant on the way back saying that the Dominican is extremely bad for this and she never stays there, she was always on the next flight back. We discovered when we returned, that this resort had about a hundred people get sick the year before. They had an investigation at the resort when we became ill, but because we had gone on an excursion, it gave them an opportunity of denying responsibility. The thing is we did not eat anything off property and we were extremely careful of what we ate and drank, always used bottled water even for brushing teeth etc. When we were in the hospital other people were also admitted but they seemed to recover faster than us for some reason. They too had stayed at the Baha. If you are wondering what I am writing this so many years later, it is because for the first time since, we are going to try going south again (not including Florida). We had gone to Jamaica 25 years ago for our honeymoon and had a great time, so we are going to try it again. Even writing this gives me anxiety thinking about it. I just want to remind people that you never know and to be very careful about where you stay.

Just got back from Puerto Plata. We went to the show Bravissimo at Ocean world. 3 of us ate the brushetta and had drinks with ice and one had beer and no brushetta (she was the only one not sick). I was sick almost immediately and doubled over with cramps. My boyfriend had an unsettled stomach soon after. My other friend had to go to the hospital in DR a couple days later as he had cramps, fever, and diarrhea. We are both still feeling the effects. If I'm not better by tomorrow, I'm off to the doctor to get some antibiotics. I was told by a seasoned traveller…the golden rule is, if it isn't cooked (yes that includes fruits and veggies) DON'T eat it. I know it's not really healthy but your body will forgive you for the week that you're away. I too won't go back to DR. Unfortunate, cause it's a beautiful place.

I'll add our 2 cents - Got back from Ocean Blue in Punta Cana Feb 21, and have had terrible diarrhea since the day after. Many in our party are the same. Worst diarrhea ever. Had chills and body aches and fatigue for a couple days, now just feeling oddly bloated even though nothing stays in me long enough that it could keep me full. Not going back. EVER.

Just home from a trip to Cabarete where, on our last night, we ate at Otra Cosa restaurant. One member in our party ate several tablespoons of the lobster bisque before sending it back because it tasted like salty metal. About 45 minutes later, she began having chronic diarrhea which culminated in uncontrolled vomiting. We had to take her to the Cabarete Medical Center in the middle of the night. She was there for 2 1/2 days on IV antibiotics and anti-parasitic drugs, diagnosed with a severe intestinal infection and amoebic dysentery. She could have died from the dehydration. We emailed the French owner of the restaurant, but he has yet to respond. There have been others who have contracted severe food poisoning at Otra Cosa restaurant. It should be shut down by the local Health Department, if there even is one! Is there anyone who can recommend an agency or department to which I can report this incident?

First time leaving the country. Stayed at the Riu Bamboo. One by one our friends came down with stomach problems. I started with headache and diarrhea the morning after an outing where we had coconut milk and real chocolate and coffee. Been home 5 days and still having BM issues. Probably will never leave the country again. Never had this problem on trips to Florida, so we will stay stateside from now on. Sad, such a beautiful place.

Just returned from Be Live Punta Cana. I have travelled throughout Mexico and Jamaica without issues. I do not eat salads or fruits aside from pineapple. I did not eat seafood or anything that was undercooked. I do not eat with my hands or touch my face while eating. I travelled with my wife and 2 children. The children were violently ill, diahrea and vomiting for 24 hours. My wife, daughter and myself have had diahrea steady for a week. Starting half way through our vacation. Somewhere along the way this resort has unsanitary conditions with food handling and / or somehow we are taking in tap water, via ice cubes, washing food. Workers not washing their hands, raw chicken contamination. Also I witnessed the maid cleaning the toilet then rinsing all of our coffee mugs and cups in tap water. I assumed we were getting fresh ones. We were told not to drink tap water, never did, but the maid made us, and possible exposed us to ecoli. My family are extremly careful when eating, washing hands before and after eating and not touching our faces. Be Live Punta Cana has issues that need attention throughout the entire process.

POOPA_CANA - Family Vacation and 90% of us fell ill…..We just returned with our whole family 10 of us! However, after the first & second days we started getting sick.
Diarrhea, vomiting, chills, stomach cramps…etc. it's hard to enjoy a vacation when there is always one person throwing up, then two, three, etc…I felt terrible for suggesting we go there. We will never go back! The major route of transmission is via the fecal-oral route - there are no restaurant health inspections, there is no water treatment, and although we went grocery shopping I am sure now that some of that food was contaminated. What a horrible situation. We met a Serbian that recently moved to DR and he said that he was shocked at how backwards the country is compared to his homeland. AVOID THIS ISLAND - if you do go, bring your own food and water - don't eat or touch anything there! The entire island is contaminated.

Family of 4

April 11th, 2016

Family of 4 stayed April 3rd to 10th 2016 at the Iberostar Costa Dorada in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. First, we had to switch rooms after the first day due to the over powering, headache-inducing smell of mildew in our room, then my husband and I contracted GI illness (including the runs and intestinal bleeding) between days 5 and 7 and are still ill. Both my daughter and I also got severe ear infections and fever from the pool (according to the resort doctor). Daughter had to be taken by ambulance to the local hospital for treatment and get cleared to fly home. After spending the better part of the day waiting alone in a room with no food, water or communication, they refused to give our daughter (who was in agony) the medicine she needed until we paid a $700 USD "deposit" while they waited for the insurance company to wire the money. We ate at the buffet, at all three of the a la carte restaurants and at the outdoor cafe and beach BBQ, so hard to pinpoint the exact cause but every where we went on the resort, we noticed: the food was not kept properly hot or cold - everything was room temperature; they often didn't practice safe food handling; leftover food was reused from meal to meal; fruit was washed under the tap; dairy, egg and meat ingredients for the food stations were kept at room temperature for over 3 hours at a time; and the bartenders used the same bar implements to mix every drinkers drink - even those that were using a personal travel mug. Noted some of these in a mid-stay survey issued by the hotel and before we got sick, but never heard back from the resort manager and saw no improvement over the course of the week. Although we tipped housekeeping, at meals, and at the bar, one can imagine it doesn't make up for how underpaid and overworked the staff are. We met some really great staff who made our stay quite pleasant, but my husband and I noticed more than a few staff who seemed unhappy and even openly hostile and indifferent towards the guests. It makes you wonder if this may be at the root of some of these issues. Maybe if they focused on making their staff happy, guests would have a better experience. Overall, would not recommend staying here and given the apparent 60% incidence rate for travelers tummy in the Dominican Republic, would not return to the country again. Did not experience these issues in Cuba or in Jamaica.

Stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel for a wedding and just got home yesterday. We were there for a week and out of the 13 people who traveled with us only two of us didn't get sick. None of us drank the water, we all ate at different restaurants and got sick on different days. I didn't end up sick until the day before we left and couldn't even eat a bite of toast. On the bus ride to the airport I had to vomit into a ziplock bag, and was sick for the entire flight home and I still am having abdominal pain and yellow diarrhea. If it persists tomorrow I'll be seeking medical attention. I will never go there again nothing was worth it, even the excursions were terrible. We even rented a bali bed on the beach and they served us warm seafood! (which we didn't eat) Punta Cana, never again!

My first time in DR. My daughter and I are staying at Majestic Colonial. Was not crazy about the food. After 2nd night my daughter woke up at 5 am vomiting. She vomited so much she almost passed out. We had the medic come and her blood pressure was so low they started an IV in our room and then took her in an ambulance to the local clinic Centro Medico Punta Cana. On the way I had to tell them to pull over and I started vomiting. It was so strange because on the side of the road was some random man with a big gun. Practically no one spoke English at the clinic. They kept pumping us with IV bag after IV bag and 'medicine' and we had no idea what they were giving us. They asked if we ate seafood so maybe that was the problem. If you eat at buffets there's no way to tell what it was. We were at clinic for about 30 hours. The bill was $3300! My insurance said I can submit a claim. We are back at the resort now for 2 more days but so scared to eat anything. Staying away from fish. From reading these posts it seems nothing is safe. I've never had any problems in Mexico or any other islands. As beautiful as the resort is, the surrounding area is very 3rd world and having to seek medical care here was really scary. Neither of us had diarrhea for whatever it's worth but the vomiting was horrible. Who knows how long we would've been sick for had we not seeked medical attention. I don't think I will be coming back here. I am seeing the hotel management in the morning to see what compensation they will offer.

Stayed at Caribe Club princess end of this May and returned on May 30. Have been dealing with Enterohemorrhagic E.coli w/ shiga toxin 1 since June 1. Tested sample on molecular assays at my diagnostic company so result was verified. Incubation time correlated with time frame as well as current duration of illness. Bad abdominal cramping , fatigue , and bloody watery stool. Antibiotics highly discourage (do not think about taking!) Just drinking plenty of liquids. Pretty sure it was from the food or possible frozen drinks.

My husband and I stayed at Hard Rock Punta Cana, luckily I was taking antibiotics prior to going, but did vomit and had diarrhea. My husband was so sick that I thought I might have to take him to the hospital- severe diarrhea, cramps, fever , nausea and dizziness. We missed excursions and had to stay in the room. The maids all knew he was sick and I asked the front desk for help several times. Our room had a one inch hole at the bottom of door and bugs were crawling in and out-sweating from bad AC and mold smell.
We returned tonight and we are heading straight to a doctor tomorrow. Hopefully he will be alright. Poopa canta-never again! They should return our money and pay for medical bills. Travel agents should not recommend this place. Beautiful, but could not enjoy because of illness.

Family Vacation

August 25th, 2016

Just returned from Dreams La Romana from a 7 night stay with my family. The trip was wonderful until the 5th night when I started feeling weak and achy all over my body with slight chills. Needless to say I went to bed early and by morning started the violent vomitting and diarrea. I also had severe fatigue and stayed in bed for the next two days, just running between the bathrooom and bed. On the 3rd day the vomitting stopped, I still had nausea and I was able to get on the plane home. I was hoping it would run its course but today is day 4 and my stomach still has the severe painful burning sensation. I've been sipping water, ginger ale, ginger tea and eating toast and crackers. I will be calling my doctor today. I can't be sure but I suspect the cesar salad I ate from room service as that was the only thing I ate different from my family and the symptoms began about six hours after consuming the salad.

My son visited the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Hotel in Punta Cana in May 2012, with a friend. Both became extremely ill with dysentery, and lost 15 pounds in 5 days. They returned home to Canada still violently ill. My son's friend took 6 months to recover; my son himself is still sick, over four years on. I write this as a warning to anyone considering a "holiday" in this dirty country. Don't go! It is not worth it!
For those interested, our son's illness was finally discovered to be due to two bacteria commonly found in contaminated water. They are: Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas veronii, biovar sobria. They cause Chronic Infectious Haemorrhagic Colitis due to producing toxins (similar to pathogenic E. coli, Shigella dysenteriae, and C. diff), and are difficult to treat because resistant to many antibiotics. In our son's case, it was I.V. Ceftriaxone and Gentamycin, plus a course of oral Bactrim (trimethroprim sulfamethoxazole) that dealt with the infection (following culture from faecal fluid harvested via colonoscopy and subsequently cultured and antibiotic susceptibility tested). BUT this antibiotic cocktail caused him then to suffer C. diff infection, which has been another horrible story, and from which he is still suffering. AND he picked up, at some point, a helminth (worm) infection - Strongyloides stercoralis - which is also hard to eradicate (Ivermectin is the best treatment for this, with Albendazole being second best; Cambendazole is best of all, but only available in Brazil and perhaps Argentina, for travellers from Latin American who have returned from the Dominican Republic with this infection).
This has been a nightmare of a story, like so many others involving a so-called 'cheap' holiday that wasn't (our heartfelt sympathies to all other posters here).

We are close to losing our home, as our son and we have together had to research his illness full-time and of course unpaid; it was either that or watch him die, which as parents we were not prepare to do. Most of his Canadian doctors refused to admit that his infection could still be 'active' by the time the first Gastro in Calgary (from Peter Lougheed Hospital) saw him, so accused of him having "auto-immune Indeterminate Colitis/ Crohn's / Ulcerative Colitis", etc (they changed their mind every month as to what label to attach to him - be warned!), despite the fact that he had been in perfect health before arriving in the D. Republic.
Despite many warnings in medical papers to take patients with a history of recent travel to a tropical location seriously, most gastros these days don't, they just pump you with steroids and immune suppressants - which, in cases of most infections are the MOST dangerous drugs to give. Do your own research, trust your instincts, don't believe the medical lies, and NEVER go on holiday to the Dominican Republic!!!
