Convert (Save) Skype WeeMee File into JPEG
How to convert (re-save) your Skype WeeMee avatar into a common JPG (JPEG) image.
WeeMee avatars created for Skype can be saved and transfered between computers, but only used within Skype. This is because the image file is saved with a .skype file type, which is unrecognizable outside that application.
The reality is that these files are actually .jpg (.jpeg) files, with a little extra information tacked onto the beginning of the file. Removing this information and saving the result as a JPG will allow you to use or edit the avatar as you would any other image.
Coverting a Skype WeeMee to a JPG
- Locate your Skype WeeMee file and make a backup copy.
- Open the file with a hex editor—sadly, this is required, as notepad (or similar programs) corrupt the image when saved. HHD Software's Free Hex Editor seems to be a good choice.
- Remove everything up until the start of this snippet of code:
ÿØÿà. A selection highlight and cut (ctrl-x) command works well here. - Then save the file with a new name and .jpg or .jpeg file extension (such as 'myweemee.jpg'). You're done.
The problem with all this is that the final image is the same size used in Skype, which is actually quite small (116×128 pixels).
Frankly, I suggest you simply recreate the avatar you've got on the WeeMee Web site, take a screenshot, and crop it down to size before saving.
