Taxis outside railway stations, bus stations and airports.

Make sure that you look at the rates display on the windows or dashboards of a taxi before getting in. The ones that hang around stations and airports, or busy tourist areas are sharks. We saw prices ranging from 0.52 Lev per km to 10 Lev per km! If you get into one without looking at it has the higher rate you will have to pay it, even if you involve the police, as the taxis are unregulated. Getting in without checking could mean that a journey that should cost only 5-7 Lev costs you 40 Lev, however you would be in good company as apparently an EU Commissioner just jumped into the first taxi outside the airport at what should have been a 20Lev fare ended up as an 120 Lev fair, even he couldn't get it reduced! I'll post a picture of the rates table so you know what to look for.

Forgot to mention in the previous post that OK taxis are mentioned in Lonely Planet as being ok, so many other firms have tried to make their cabs look like OK Taxis, CKs being the worst offenders (and on overpriced fares). In Sofia a fare of 0.89-0.99 is ok but you will have to walk away from stations and flag a taxi down as all the taxis waiting may have the rip off fares.
