Add Accented International Keyboard Keys

How to use a custom keyboard layout to add or enable accented characters and European characters in Windows:

I'm doing a lot of typing with accented characters these days, and find it annoying to enter these on a traditional American keyboard. The Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator allows you to design your own keyboard configuration, or modify on an existing layout.

My problem with the default "US - International" setting in Windows is the quotation mark key (and two others) are configured in such a way that it disables the key unless you strike it twice (thinking that you want to add an accented character or European character, instead of the quote mark). This is called a dead key, and it couldn't have been placed in a more frequently used spot.

Adding International accent characters or European characters to a standard keyboard layout is now as simple as downloading the custom layout I put together for use on my own system. Reference the screenshots below to get a preview of how things will work.
